Gran Turismo 5 could be delayed to late 2008

The release of the highly-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 on PS3 could be pushed back as far as late 2008 says director Kaunori Yamauchi, who wants the game to be absolutely perfect before it's released.
Speaking with US-based Car and Drive magazine (via Gamers-Creed), Yamauchi touted spring 2008 as the earliest that the game could see release, but affirmed that Sony is more than willing to push that date back to the end of the year should his team need more time.
Yamauchi made reference to the cars as being one of the key time-consuming aspects of developing the game. It's taking 180 days for someone to build a car in the levels of detail required for GT5, as oppose to 30 days for GT3 and just one day for the original GT on PSone.
Crash damage has also once again been ruled out, Yamauchi saying that some companies don't want their cars smashed up in the game (despite damage featuring on the licensed cars of PGR, Forza and other games).
He also says adding the perfect damage system would mean changing the physics model of the game, and modelling each panel of every car separately, both normal and crumpled, with different lighting and shadows. Again, if other games can do it, why can't GT? They're not exactly short of time.
He did say, however, that crash damage could possibly be delivered as a post-release download, and that downloadable cars were a certainty.
Meanwhile, you'll have to make do with the minimalist offerings provided in GT HD for another year or more.
I don't know where to start but I'm starting to feel a little sorry for Polyphony. It sounds like they're being over perfectionists, do they really need to spend 180 days to make a single car? Meaning 360 days if we want to see damage? It all sounds a bit bollox to me.Monday 2-Jul-2007 11:28 AM Director Kaunori Yamauchi driving for perfection

HAHA!
What a waste of time!
So glad i never got a PS3 seems like they are really going to suffer, every time I go into GAME there is always someone going on saying there are no decent games for PS3
Proper cracks me up to think that all the next gen games are now being released on 360 and are amazing!

This is precisely why I decided to get a 360.
ditto.I've been converted to Forza 2 now - and now I know that Grand Theft Auto is to be released on the XBox first - I reckon this may kill the PS3 dead.
Well, apparently the interview this news was taken from is over 3 months old, and Kaz has since said there should be damage for race cars (apparently the licensing for road cars with all the manufactuers was too dificult to agree on).
But this is all words written in forums, so I guess we'll have to wait n see...

As mentioned before, other games have damage , sounds just like an excuse to not put the feature in.But this is all words written in forums, so I guess we'll have to wait n see...
it sounds to me like they are spending so much time on the graphics that it will be a wonderful photo-realistic experience.
until you start racing.
Where-upon, the car dynamics will be the same as GT4. As will the AI, the collision dynamics, oh, and the whole game structure.
While this isnt the worst thing in the world - if i'd bought a PS3 i'd be preparing for dissapointment.

I've had a PS3 since December and have been full disappointed since day one, there's no 'preparing' about it.Anyway, as mentioned in this thread, it seems that the article has since been debunked... the info was lifted from a 3 month old Car&Driver magazine and limited damage seems to be making its way in for racecars only, so about 10% of the field.
Still, thank god for Forza 2!
Although this information is old it has not been debunked. The game is indeed currently listed as Q4 2008 release.
However, this Q4 date is for the Japanese market only, everywhere else will get it later still, rumoured to be Q1 2009 (UK/Europe have been last everytime if memory serves)

Like you didn't see this a mile off...
I think I even suggested as much in the Forza thread a couple of weeks ago. It's still good fun and undoubtedly will be worth buying if you've already got a PS3, but things are moving on from invincible cars, iffy handling, Scalextric artificial intelligence and sounds by Electrolux and Dyson.
For example, I was playing GT Legends last night. Setting aside the obvious graphical, sound and handling differences, it felt far more like being in a race - the AI cars didn't sideswipe me if we entered a corner side by side, if I went wide one of them would slip up the inside, and when pushing another driver hard he'd lock up the brakes into a corner, one of them even spinning out.
Compare to Gran Turismo, where despite all the promises we've been given the same *clonk* "a player car, you say?" artificial intelligence each time out, and you can see how the series is gradually slipping behind. I don't care if someone spent 180 days on each car so it's got the correct type of seal around the indicator lens, I buy a racing game because I want to race.

Not at all surprised, and as said previously you just know it will be like a Ferrari with an old 1.0 Austin Metro engine in it... Will look stunning but sound and perform like an asthmatic snail.
I can almost feel the frustration of instant spinning when traction is lost and the looped tyre squeel audio hypnotising the masses into a coma.
I used to love the GT games, but times have moved on and the GT franchise hasn't.

I remember the GT games fondly, I used to think they were the pinnacle of car handling physics. I had about a 5 year break from any type of racing game, then discovered the GTR games for PC, and now rFactor - I now realise there are MUCH better games out there than the GT series, I even think that the 'arcady' TDU cars handle about the same as the cars on Gran Turismo, especially after playing the 'real' race car games.

PS3's are shite
You are entitled to your own opinion of course, but why does everything have to degenerate into a Xbox is better than a PS2 is better than a [insert console of choice] argument? Why does any discussion about racing games end up as a GT4 is rubbish because of x, y or z and that Forza 2 is the best thing since someone invented air!!!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but why does everything need to be some sort of religious war? And that someone might have a different opinion, why does it lead to blanket statements such as this?
There is room in the world for all of these consoles and for many, they will have both. That is fine, but come on everyone has different favourites.
Personally, I am shocked that Microsoft has the audacity to sell defective goods. Quite how many Xbox360's have died? How many people are on their 2nd or even 3rd console? What about this scratched disk problem? Come on, does that sound like a reliable piece of consumer electronics?
Nah, thought not. And no, I dont own a PS3.
