Ford Cougar tyres

My girlfriend has a Cougar 2 (facelift model)

Anyway, the standard tyre size is 215/50 R16 90V

Only two brands are available, some Kuhmo's which I think are a bit wank (wear a bit funny towards the end), and Bridgestones which are ancient and £100 each.

Thought about 205/50's but these are mainly 87V?W rated, rather than 90V/W, a good 75kg less per tyre, which is a fair bit (600kg > 525kg is a fair old drop)

So, does anyone know much about going wider?

I'm tempted by 225/45 R16's, but might these end up being too wide for the wheel (guess they will fit, but will it handle a bit funny?)

Nearly bought a Cougar a couple of years ago - I didn't in the end cos the tyres front and back were different sizes on the one I was looking at (sign of neglect IMO).

Anyway, I think the front set had a sidewall height of 50, the rears a sidewall height of 55. (same width IIRC).

I remember reading at the time that a lot of people use the taller '55' tyres cos they're easier to find in that size.

This may be an option worth investigating further.

Well after looking at lots of tyres and checking the ratings I ended up just getting the Kuhmo's again...

Would have been nice to try something different but the selection/ratings just seem to go against the car/wheels at every step.

Yep Wayne, it is a bit underrated really. I'm not a huge fan of the looks (it is the facelifted Cougar 2, so it's noticeably different in detail and an improvement on the 1), but the drive is pretty nice for what it is!
