Right my Chim badly needs a spray job now. Too many stone chips and key'd scratches.

I have been to a couple of spray garages and the quotes am getting are stupid.

By the way the car has no dents or accident damage.

1st garage - Full same colour respray £3800
2nd garage - same colour - £2000, Different colour £2800
3rd garage - same colour with tint or laquer - £4000

Has anyone actually had a full respray done.
I would like to know where and at what prices.

Am not interested in the Ewell coach works garage.

Cheers

Pena,

I would recomend avoiding all the local garages, unless they have a history of spraying TVR's (glassfibre cars).

The respray cost will vary depending on the amount of chips, cracks repair work involved. Your quotes seem high, considering that a full Cerb respray, in a different colour, and inculing front light conversion is only £2500.

Why not give Webbs a call and see what they price at.
(Webbs Auto Specialist Cars Tel: 01275 858461. The work i have seen oftheirs is to an incredible standard.

Don't think I'm being funny here, but working with GRP is a right pain. You can loose the lines when rubbing down and it takes a skilled man to do a good job. The main cost is filling and grinding back any cracks that there may be. This is what costs the dosh!

You could go to one place who perhaps will either not see beyound the surface or will just slap the paint on.

Next time you get a quote, ask them what they are going to do, you may be suprised what will be required.

Use a TVR specialist to advise you on whats needed and they will put you on to a paint shop they trust.

good luck.

Yup, Webbs Autos is the place to go. Just got my 95 Chim back from there, literally looks as good as new. Very good service too.

Okay...
Thanks for the quck response .
The last garage that I recieved the quote from is a well respected garage used by some of the TVR dealers in the area.

I must say, that I have noticed a sort of behaviour from Spray garages in the past. If its an insurance job (They are very willing to take their time to explain everything), but if not, they just say the same thing...

"Really had to tell, until we have began but expect between £????? - £????? "

Yeah right, am gonna really give your the car, and then get hit by a bill I was not expecting.

thornogson - Am gonna give you a ring this evening, if thats okay ?

I going to check out Webb Autos as well....what region are they in ?

I just got my Mk 1 Sprite (In GRP!) back from a guy Rob who has done a fantastic paintjob for a great and agreed price. OSC are near Chessington Zoo. A the time the guy had two stretch Rollers in for complete resprays. I was speachless when I collected my car.

Sorry to disagree but this is exactly what an honest shop is giong to tell you

The high quotes you've got are for a worst case scenario, but they'll happily take the cash if it happens to take half the time

You can't tell how much prep is needed until you get the paint off (unlike metal), by then you're committed, this is why you should take it to a fibreglass specialist (not because they'll necesarily do a better job)

It'll cost between £££ and £££££££
Is fair, but if you want a fixed price they're only ever going to quote you £££££££

How much did it cost you to sort out your beast...
Remember the finished paint work stunning.

I live just round the corner from Chessington, so I would love to know where OSC are...got a number for them ?

Might be worth having a word with an independent like David Batty and seeing who he would recommend. He's based over towards Guildford ... not too far from you.

If you are in Chessington (I am in Surbiton) then try Bee Gees - They are used by Mole amongst other clients and do good job on TVRs and some more exotic makes, they had a banged up 550 when I looked in a few months back.

TVR Power quoted me £3000 for a full respray to my Griff 500, the respray being carried out back at the TVR factory in Blackpool. This is very competitive and quality assured to original standard. My cars booked in so your will be after mine.

I did most of the work myself (~50 hours), but (foolishly) paid £2,300 to get the top coat of filler prime and paint done (because I didn't have time and wanted the car for the summer (last year))

You can see where they've cut corners, they said three weeks, it turned into three months blah blah. I really wouldn't recomend them for anything more complicated than toilet cleaning. This is annoying because the top coat quality was actually pretty good
