The gearbox is a fairly standard T56 6-speed box - not much good for an Ultima, even though it can be configured as a transaxle by replacing the tail section with a diff. The cobra people tend to be very keen on these though - there are bellhousings for the SBC available. I bought one of these a little while ago and swapped it with the standard gearbox in my HSV - the ratios are much better for spirited driving than the standard box.
I've been keeping half an eye on this auction too...but I'm going to stick with my original plan to use an LS6 motor.

Most of the parts are common between the LS1 and LS6 - main differences are the head design and stock camshaft.
Have a wander round www.ls1.com for more information on tuning.

There are quite a lot of differences between the ls1 and ls6. All the vette units have fly by wire throttles and big wing sumps. Ls1's have a cable throttle body. Later ls6 has a sand cast block with windows at the base of the liners. Ls1 block is die cast. The vette and Ls6 have a better intake manifold and vette motors have higher compression and more balancing done on them. Later ls6 has D port exhausts, teflon coated pistons and sodium valves in them, inlet & exhaust and a split level sump. The ls6 is very expensive, the ls1 is cheaper. There are at least 4 factory stock exhaust options and 4 sumps. It's a case of knowing exactly what you want and if it will fit otherwise you will have a load of parts left over which need changing. This is why I bought a load of stock,to be versatile. You should either buy a stock ls1 and tweak it and the ecu or build one up with after market management. Also, if you go for a vette unit the gearbox is a transaxle item so you will have to source a t56 from elsewhere or think about adapting something else like a US T5.
