Discussion
IMO either needs an OPC warranty or proof that main issues have been rectified at some point eg Intermediate shaft bearing, cylinder heads and any other well documented engine problem areas.
4 months ago I bought privately a 996 C2 1999 at 73K miles with 1 years OPC warranty at £22K.
2 months ago I had £13K worth of engine rebuild (under warranty) as a result of a diagnosis of 'imminent catastrophic engine failure' This was discovered following a warranty RMS fix.
Get it wrong and I believe it can be painful.

Opinions on a £20k 996? There are a few at just over this in the Classifieds which caught my attention.
A bottomless pit of money or a performance bargain?
I wouldnt say it was a bottomless pit..however with Evo 6's trading at 12k i wouldnt call it a performance bargain either..A bottomless pit of money or a performance bargain?
At that kind of price, it's almost certainly going to be a high-miler so I'd want to see evidence of a full OPC/recognised indie service history and wouldn't consider it without a thorough pre-purchase inspection and a decent (for which read OPC) warranty.
There have been a number of threads about £20K 996s over the past few months. Admittedly, they usually degenerate into the usual 993 -v- 996 slanging match but they may be worth a search for the earlier posts before the argument almost inevitably turns to air-cooled versus water-cooled residuals.....

This interests/worries me. Was it a problem for it to be covered under warranty?4 months ago I bought privately a 996 C2 1999 at 73K miles with 1 years OPC warranty at £22K.

Are there any conditions which need to be met to buy an OPC warrenty? I.e. does it have to have had an OPC warrenty since new, must have been OPC serviced etc?
I'll also dig out the older threads.
Thanks again.

Any car up to 9 years or 125K miles can have an OPC warranty taken out on it. As I understand it, the only requirement is to have the car put through an OPC 111 point check. You then have to have remedial work done to rectify problems identified by the check before the warranty can be applied, or accept that the warranty will exclude those items. Current cost is £895 p.a.
It doesn't need to have been OPC serviced, or indeed to be serviced by an OPC going forwards, as long genuine Porsche parts have been/are used going forwards.
It's obviously easier to buy a car that has warranty already on it. Simply a case of renewing with a phone call before it runs out. Need to buy privately though as I believe an independent is not officially allowed to sell on a cars OPC warranty.
As has been said, no real dramas getting warranty post 111 point check.

Hi Nick
Have you bought another (very understandable)?
Honestly, don't worry about the rebuild. If anything it's made the experience even better. It certainly felt tighter when I picked up. Can't believe I waited so long to get one and am very happy. Had some xenon lights fitted which are great and am about to install airbag deactivator in order to keep her for when junior arrives in October. Must be love as I've just bought a Zymol kit and with wifey away on Saturday, guess what I'm doing...

sorry for numpty question ... what creates the requirement for one of these 111 point checks? For example, if the car has always been covered by a warranty, can you keep renewing the warranty each year without one of these checks until you hit the age/mileage limit?
Yes. You need a 111 point check if there has been a break in the warranty (think there may be a grace period of a few weeks)PhillF said:
Can anyone help with details of the 111 point check?
Just call Porsche and ask them what it includes. I don't think I'd trust it to buy a car on, I'd be more interested in how it actually drove, history, current owner, money spent on it etc.or get an independant to check it like peter morgan.
