My TDi200 Disco is getting past it's sell by date. It keeps on going but it now has lots of work to be done. The list goes along the lines of needing new shocks, rear suspension upper link ball joint and bushes, new sills on N/S and various bits of welding on the body mounts, new discs, the clutch is on the way out and the synchro's gone on second gear and it needs a new timing belt.
Question is do I spend a bit of money and do it up I reckon £500 should cover it as I can do everything myself except the clutch and gearbox and I can get that done at a bargain price. Or do I dump it and buy something newer.
Downside on something newer is I can't go beyond a Y reg due to price and the road tax pricing so I could end up buying as much trouble as I have now.

Although the TDi200 is slow and uncomfortable it is reasonably economical at around 28-30mpg and about 22mpg when I tow with it. It does everything I need it for which is going to work, towing my race car and moving up to 2 tons of hay to my wife's stables and of course a trailer full of horse shit once a week.
And finally it goes and goes and I can't ever remember it letting me down.
So, what to do?????

Edited to add, I suppose the timing belt, clutch and discs are service items and will be the smae on anything I get.

Sounds like you need to do the sensible thing and let the old girl have a decent burial!

If it is really that worn out and rotten, then cut your losses now before a running resto becomes a full scale rebuild.

I see these vehicles every day and they are now becoming worth less and less, even when restored.

I would advise that you spend the money on upgrading to a late 300 Tdi ( you can still work on them easily), you should be able to buy a good one with history and reasonable mileage for about £3k to £4k.

Cheers and good luck

You mention road tax pricing on a vehicle later than 'Y' reg. Why is this a problem? The banding in 2001 only went up to 'F' and this is still only £210, so not much more than an earlier Disco! The higherst band 'G' only applies after 2006 (March I think).

Not so much the road tax but more what will happen in the near future with Commie Ken and our local leftie council and the 4X4 hate campaign they wage.

The stupid tax rules also dont seem to apply if your land rover (Defender anyway) happens to be a hard top.

A devil you know is better than a devil you don't.
Istill think the 200TDI is the best engine, trouble is the other bits just start dropping off around you, have you thought about a very late 300 TDI ?

The only engine i know anything about is the TDi200 and yes it seems to go on and on. I've heard horror stories about the TDi300 and later engines, I think the BMW one is OK but not sure what they are fitted to.
Anyhoooo, I've decided to do a few jobs on it, I've bought the cam belt and pulleys and will do the welding and other bits but leave the gearbox and clutch until one of them dies on me.
Hopefully I will get another year or two out of it or until I can find another bargain like this was.
