Way back in 2004 I bought an early ripshifter direct from Oz. Was fitted to my car by a specialist, however not long after the lever went all wobbly and I had to re-fit the lever mech myself using locktite. The gearchange has been fine since but the lever has always been noisy and buzzes under power, especially in 4th gear. Do the later rippers (if there is such a thing) suffer from this noise problem. As said, I had to retro fit half of it myself and I'm wondering if the original installer has dome something to cause this noise. Or do I have a generic mark 1 - 'they all make that noise, sir' - type ripper. The box itself is fine no change problems.

I remember talking to Mark (rapidgb) about this when he was at LSV. From memory there are two shifters of sorts now. A more road one that keeps the gator and is quiet and a race one which is noisy. I think the early ones were prone to noise anyway but a subsequent change stopped it (this is from memory of conversations and reading)

All the early shifters were of the strip type which is slightly noisier than the later road type which we now supply as a matter of course. The road type has extra noise isolation between the gearbox and the gear knob by retaining the top of the factory shifter; the strip type replaces the whole shifter and deletes the factory isolation.

The fitting of replacement shifters needs care and there are some specifics depending on car and the use of Loctite is essential. If the internal of the shift knob has been incorrectly removed the internals of the knob might be broken this could be causing the buzzing.

As the UK distributor for Ripshifter if you have specific issues that you think needs attention please feel free to drop into a Wortec dealer for a check. We also offer the option to upgrade from the strip version to the road version.

From memory this sounds about right. I may have an early 'race' shifter. I wonder how the road ones differ?

Hows that for a quick reply

Might need to get mine exchanged then. Anyone want a race version laugh

Ok so I didn't buy it through wortec as you know, and it was fitted by someone else. I'd go to Monkfish, but it's a bit far for me, is there a dealer nearer to Essex who could do an exchange?

You seem to be between Monkfish and Green's. Either one could help you out.

I have standard shifter at present but my nob buzzes a lot when the car is cold, as in internal air temps

is this a known issue and if I got the ripshift installed would it be a problem?

Hi Guys,

Those with standard shifters or the non race version of the Rip, you could have a problem with the sealant on the gearknob. Basically Holden use a small amount of black silicon/rubber sealant on the shaft and gearknob to absorb some of the movement and help stop rattles. On my car within the first 6 months of ownership my rattled when you play with the loud pedal a little when engine/gearbox not so warm.

Fix is to clean it all off and apply some new dent stuff - I have had mine off twice now, first to fix and second to try a new shorter shifter. You could get extreme like me and apply a little dynamat to the shaft and tape between the two shafts - it all helps.

Cheers
Steven

thanks Steven

as I am planning on getting a shifter it can wait until then. I tend to drive holding the nob when its cold for some reason (probably to stop the annoying buzz!)
