i can think of lots of ways. but i don't think any of them are what you are after.

do you mean to run the IPOD as usual, but play the music through the car speakers, or do you want to upload the contents of the IPOD to your MP3 head-unit?

i'm not sure you can do the second one.

this may be a little Heath Robinson/daft, but...

if you have a cassette player, read on. if you have a CD player in the dash, this won't be much use. handheld CD player in-car kits came with a cassette shaped adapter to allow transmission from the CDMan to the head-unit. If you can get hold of one of these with a headphone male that matches the female on the IPOD, i can't see why it wouldn't work.

It wouldn't really be in keeping with the rest of your car...but i think it would work.

BOBO, i'm struggling now mate!

however, i'll do you a favour. if i say this:

"It definitely cannot be done. Definitely."

then it will only be a matter of hours before this thread is full of people quoting this, calling me a fool, and giving you the answer you need.

You see the lengths i will go to for a fellow technophobe? My ego is in tatters, but hey!

Hi Bobo,

I don't know, if this is supported by IPOD, but a mate has a radio sender on his mp3 portable, which broadcasts the tracks in a range of about 10 meters. If he uses it in his car he sets his radio to the mp3 player's frequency and listens to his mp3 on his car stereo.

Don't know if that complies with every country's telecommunications laws though

The previous idea of using a cd car kit and plugging the IPOD into the tape deck will work, but the sound quality will instantly go to the sh!tter. The connection between IPOD to cassette deck reader is awful.

Much better to bite the bullet and either make up some cds, or buy an headunit with a hard-drive. Theres some available with about a 10Gb hard-drive.

It's been mentioned on here before (General Gassing though) that no-one makes an IPOD equivalent for the car market... Any budding entrepreneurs out there? Blatent market gap that needs filling.

Good luck finding a solution thats to your liking.

Related to this: This could be possible but the only output on the IPOD is the headphone socket to my knowledge (correct me if wrong). Therefore it isn't much use.

The outputs on cd changers are 2 AV cables for the sound and a seperate lead for the headunit to operate the changer (change cds etc).

Therefore, without these outputs the IPOD's use is limited in a car.

Well, it can be done ! A mate of mine has had his IPOD plumbed into his 993 Turbo - now before you get excited I know the 993's ICE is rather different to the whole integrated 996 set-up. But I think it would be worth your while giving Auto Audio a call on 0208 7494949. They had never done it before either, but managed to come up with a really neat system whereby they managed to feed a wire through to the driver's side door bin and built up a nice little platform for the IPOD to sit on - it all works really well (I think they've even got a power supply through to it as well).

Worth a go I reckon - there's no such word as 'can't' !

What output did they use on the IPOD? To my knowledge there is only the headphone socket... by using that you're surely getting a much less quality sound through the stereo...

So, BOBO, did you find anything?

I was looking at

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=201526&pcount=&Product_Id=140984

But of course it is only available for our friends in the US...

If you have the CDR220 or the CR220, you can purchase a kit from Becker for about $20 US that will allow you to plug in your IPOD. Here's the part number:

1319.116-276 from Becker

Good luck.
