Phone module, do I or dont I have one?
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Ive recently bought a 996 turbo. It wasnt advertised as having a phone module, but now ive played a bit, i'm wondering if it has one but is maybe faulty.
Perhaps some one can confirm the following.
My PCM2 has the keypad and a sim socket. The screen says "please insert sim". If I do so, it appears to initialise, but shows a message at the bottom " loading phone book" which doesnt go away and the screen says "searching networks". Very occaisionally, the word ORANGE will pop up and 2 bars will show for about 2 seconds, then dissapear again.
I'm not sure how the PCM reacts when there is no phone module and when I phoned my OPC they said they would need to look at it before commenting. As this involves a 40 mile trip, I was hoping to get an answer elsewhere first.
All help appreciated.

I seem to remember (from other threads on here) that they can be fussy about sim cards and that the advice was to try a Vodafone one. Sounds like you may well have it - especially if you get a couple of bars (albeit briefly).
If you look under the bonnet there should be a list of the options that were fitted at the factory, then look here:
http://www.performance2and4.co.uk/3.2optioncodes.h...
or one of several similar sites (Google will find 'em) and you should be able to work out what was factory fitted. Obviously it won't cover retro-fitted options but PCM unlikely to be retro-fitted. HTH!

You do have the phone (I'm sure it's standard on a turbo) but it sounds like it's playing up! Mine is doing something similar at the moment.....it cuts out during a call and then shows "insert simcard". A short while later it appears to return to normal but the problem continues for a few more calls before correcting itself.....complete mind of it's own really!! Hope you sort it and if you do please let me know. In the meantime I'm going to try a different simcard. I will keep you posted!
Thanks for the info. Ive got my options list but I cant find a phone on it. I cant find a phone on the published list either so i'm just as confused as before.
I will have to try a different phone provider as you suggest.
Interestingly, the PCM lists an identity number which looks suspiciously like an IMEI number.
Ive also ordered the latest sat nav discs, which comes with a multimedia update disc. I suspect the O.S is out of date and I cant find a way to get the PCM to list it. Maybe the update will help with any phone problems I may be experiencing.

I would like to upgrade the nav in mine too. Where/how much were the disks? Press the Main and Trip buttons at the same time to see the sw versions.
Thanks
Ive ordered mine from the OPC..bloody expensive...£420...it does include the multimedia update disc, so I will get postcodes and the TMC will get enabled + an option or two extra. Thanks

Ill report back when ive tried it.
I'm gonna have a look at the possibility of cloning the discs, I beleive theyre protected. I dont want to be scratching my originals if I can help it, besides, I like a challenge.
Ok on the phone module. It certainly appears to have a module in it. It goes through all the motions but cant find a network.
Time to give Paragon a ring I think. This could be interesting because when I spoke to the service guy about it, he said it wasnt offered for sale with a phone and therefore didnt know if it had been included in the guarantee.
Its a 53 plate 996tt, and if its a standard fitting then I may have a fight on my hands. The best way to assess the quality of a warranty is to try and make a claim on it.
Ill keep you posted.
