Automatic free wheeling hubs?

When theres no drive being transmitted from transfer side side of gearbox,
the drive shafts, which would still be revolving along with the wheels are isolated from the hubs by a switch,
operateed at standstill on the outer face of wheel, by hand.
right.....
how do modern automatic ones work?
