Is incorrect spacing of number/letters an offence that carries a points penalty, or is it a fine only? Thanks for any info.

No points, would normally be £30 non endorsable fixed penalty but you can be summonsed to court if repeat offender or not willing to accept ticket.

Also the DVLA can revoke the registration number if it is being abused, not sure on exact method but I think two or more reports from police that it is being displayed incorrectly.

And there is a discretionary disqualification available now days (in common with most offences).

Didn't I read somewhere that you can INSIST the officer issues (IIRC) a vehicle defect rectification scheme ticket, where you have to have the defect sorted out within 14 days before reporting to a police station with the evidence of the fix? Nothing to pay.

Or was this before Police Stations were abolished?

You can't insist, the decision is theirs.

Ok, fair comment. So if you stopped me and I had a dodgy plate in some way (minor -- not wong numbers or anything, just spacing or size or front missing) how would you respond?

And if you said you wanted to fine me 30 rubs, and I asked politely if I could use the VDRS what would you say?

a deviatin on a theme here .. My Private plate is legally spaced, but the standard plate had over 3" of smace at either end, and, on my new car, the one edge kept getting damaged, so I cut 2" off each side, reducing the overall length of the plate, but not obscuring the plate. Im guessing this is probably illegal too, but a £30 penalty is cheaper than the hassle of replacing the front plate every 2 - 3 months

As long as there is 11mm between the first and last characters and the edges of the plate , you are legal.
