Someone has a numberplate I'd like to buy. I don't think it means much to most people and maybe the person owning it (on a 2000 318i se) just has it by accident.

So can I write to the DVLA and get their name and address so I can contact them?

tell them you had a minor bump they will be more than happy to take your cash in return for realising personal data.

So seriously, if I wrote to the DVLA saying I have a witness who thinks a bmw reg xyz bumped into my car in a carpark, I'd be able to get their address?

That's shocking...

All out of interest, according to your profile, you're "Wheldon". How can you make that from a 51 plate? WH51DON?

I would never see WH51DON and think 'Wheldon'! So the numberplate would only mean anything special to yourself and maybe those that know both you and the car you drive. But then I have never seen the attraction of numberplates with obscure (only in the mind of the owner?) substitutions. But if you think its worth it, what the hell it's your money, go for it. However, I trust that you do not intend to change the spacing to render the numberplate illegal.

If that is the case then it could well be argued that all personalised number plates are a waste of money, most likely need illegal spacing to make them legible in the intended way and thus attract fines and further sanctions. It astonishes me that amount of money which is shelled out for something with zero intrinsic value just so strangers can see your car and read "TW1T", or similar.

However, someone paying out £10,000 for something like "FLY 80Y" or something like that is their own choice and not my own, but if the OP can get something which he values to him at more than what he can get it for (pretty cheap) then good luck to him!

I do sometimes wonder what will happen to the number plate 'market' should the law change and become a lot more strict and much harsher penalties for infringement. Those who have spent thousands on plates which only work with serious spacing alterations and/or font changes will lose thousands overnight!
