Hi all,

Have any of you or do you know of anyone who's converted a 944 to power steering?

Mines a manual rack and it spoils the car as everything else about it is superb!

I've looked over the parts pages and there is alot of pipe work plus obviously pump, pump bracket, crank pulley, belt etc etc

So if someone's done it and can tell me its fairly straight forward then I'll give it a go but if not then I'll gear up for the back up plan!

Changing the rack should be easy as its very accessible so I was considering using an electric power steering pump from and astra or saxo/106 which I can mount and a number of places leaving just 4 wires and two pipes, the only thing that makes me apprehensive about doing that is the rather large load the pump will put on the cars original electrics.

Any thoughts or ides on this?

I thought about this converstion on my old 924S, and decided it was more trouble than it was worth. It is possible and I don't think it would take too long. Quite a few new brackets will be needed but all should be available from a good Porsche breakers.

I just decided I did not do enough miles in the car to justify it, I would certainly use genuine Porsche parts as all the mounting holes are in place and the car is designed for PS. This will also ensure you keep the nice steering feel you have.

In the USA there is a trend for people to fit on the older steering racks in place of PAS rscks.

Having read and replied to your other question about uprated breaks, may i offer you this advice? .... Buy a newer car with the parts you want on it.

Much less hassle and could save you cash in the long run.

Anything you spend uprating your 84 944 wont add a penny to the resale value. Buyers just wont care about the mods.

Sell it off and buy a new one, I know thats harsh cos i love my 87 944, and people scoff at my plans to put a 1000bhp skyline TT motor in there. But... it's sadly true... uprating big parts is a waste of cash.

Though, i do ing love my Boxster wheels smile

Oh I'm not worried about resale values or cost of changing things. Playing around with stuff is my hobby and improving old cars is my thing, see the capri in my profile. £15k I spent on that and I'm still not done! I'm looking at an ls1 in that now!

Ref the porsche I can't afford to change it for a later model, this car was only £800 and if I wanted to change to another one then it'd need to be a turbo and there's no way I can afford that although I understand what you're saying and why you're saying it.

Well I don't want to go over board with it just make it that be nicer to drive. Power steering would make a huge difference to it as anything other than flat out driving its a real pain.

Ref the brake the present ones are worn and a bit past it so I thought instead of replacing with standard why not upgrade if its easily done so.

What spec brakes do 928's have? Single piston calipers or different?
