okay - my understanding is that the legal limit for tyres is 1.6mm across 75% of the tread?

Correct?

I've just checked my rears - well the right one is fine at 3mm, but the left rear is 3mm for most of the tyre, but the outside edge is down to 1.6mm!

Its hard to say whether the flat part is 25% of the tread, but am i likely to have a problem here? I was planning on switching the rears around - as I think roundabouts may be the cause of the extra wear?

Change it & you won't have to worry. I think 3mm is now seen as the best time to change tyres anyway.

I'ts the center 3/4 of the tread that is measured for the 1.6 mm.

Outer edges are not included however watch for the excessive wear running to the cord or ply as it will then be a 3 points and £60 penalty.

Even if it's legal...you only have 4 contact points with the road. Might cost you £100 a corner, but it's got to be worth it when you consider the increased risk of sliding off a damp bend (into a tree and certain death).

Swapping worn tyres around is a no-no I would say

Fidg - don't around with tyres

it's your only point of contact with the road and judging by the down pours we're having it might cost you more than a set of boots

yeah, i'll probably get some new ones stuck on...

the fronts have about 6mm - so I might as well replace the rears, maybe get them to stick the new ones on the front and put the 6mm on the back.

well, mytyres has the ones it has at 80 quid a pop - it just seems a bit dodgy since the cheapest quote so far for them was 150 from the place thats done it for me the last few times... The rest are up at the 200 quid a tyre mark.

Has anyone used mytyres? do they deliver to you or the fitting garage - there is one reccomended locally, but IIRC they were the people that fitted a different sort of tyre than i paid for years ago..

Also check out http://www.camskill.co.uk/

Used them a couple of times, no problems. Phone around local tyre fitters for the best deal, typically £10-15 per wheel.

try camskill and blackcircles all are very reasonable priced and where are in the SW as I know a couple of places in surrey that do a good job.

Micheldever is another who are competitive but based in bucks berks area I think.

had my tyres changes which were legal. About 2 mm. The difference was incredible with the new tyres. You could actually drive in the wet without aquaplaning!

Didn't realise that bellow 3mm the performance drops dramatically.

Micheldever is in Hampshire, and the tyre company used to be there, unless they have moved....

When I used to work in the trade a few years back Micheldver had depots all over the place so may still be worth a punt.

I know a few people who have used e-tyres I think it is with good results.

Used mytyres (based Glasgow) a number of times and they've been great for me!
