Hardcore enthusiasts and tuners, exhausts?
Discussion
I was just wandering, the subject on exhaust upgrades went dead a long while back.
Is there any benefit from a free flow system with a remap on an already well-running cerb? how many horses are free'd up?
What is the school of thought here? Being an NA engine, does the AJP bode well with 2.5" all the way, or would a 2"-split all the way help with low down torque at the expense of top end peak performance (though top end isnt nearly always an issue considering you cant drive faster than 70 on roads anyhow)....
Is there any particular exhaust system design that adds to the aura-of-sound to the cerbie and dually also adding a few HP?
Just wandering what the experience has been, I'm sure the techs out there have tried many different combos over the years... what gives and what goes?
At the same time, question of custom headers? anyone noticed a difference in this area? any research results? come on chaps, spill the beans!

Have you considered the SP system?
Plenty of R&D went into creating this high performance system that sounds great, gains power, yet stays under trackday noise threshold. Beautifully made too, all stainless with chrome tips. My and Nickccc's cars (pictured) both use the SP system and have been tuned by Joolz to 420bhp and 440bhp respectively.

from another thread a while ago, but I rememebered it!
I think this exhaust looks the mutts nuts, and presume performance wise is a good option. Also i believe that it's not to noisy and will get on most tracks, which is such an important consideration.
My sports exhausts are about a year old now. They are too loud when you give it beans, when a car looks as good as the cerbera i feel you do not need to shout from the rooftops on your arrival. Leave that to the Scooby and Nova brigade.
My exhausts sit WAY to low and despite efforts to raise em just aren't snug like those above. Sometimes I think the car looks like a wheelbarrow! Because they are low they scrape too, so I am now looking at adjusting the damping etc etc. I'm amazed it was left like this when it was installed, a really poor job IMHO but there you go.
So, when my exhausts finally fall off after bouncing along A roads I'd look into this option.
I should have an article in Sprint at some point, but the upshot of all my testing is:
you can't have a pipe that's too big.
there are no low down gains from keeping to 2.25 or 2.5, you will lose top end though on well over 400hp cars with pipes this size (though to be fair they're few and far between even these days).
that's about it really
I'm sure there'll be someone who comes along and says "we tested some systems and unless you use out 2.398 inch radial bent involute tapered megaphone you'll not see the full hp... but essentially that'd be bo
ocks. Big hp = big pipe
and no midrange/low range / any range losses. Simple.

Funnily enough Ash, Ive very recently had the ACT 'Big Bore' syestem put on my car (it was actually Tim's development pipes straight off his car). Paul wants to 'trim' the map on my car (
) and then stick it on the rollers. As I had a power run done fairly recently on Austec's new rollers, I should be able to give up a decent before/after comparison, just need to find the time that suits both Paul and myself.
I have to say, the SP sytems are certainly things of beauty and appear, to my inexperienced eye, to be very well made, but being a cheapskate I bought the 'used' ACT system for half the price of an SP one
I havent got round to measuring the dba yet, initially I thought it wasnt as loud as my old system, which had a real spiteful snap and bark to it, but this one seems to be a deeper/bassier sound and when I get up next to houses/walls etc, you can certainly hear the noise bouncing off of them. And the noise I used to get when the flames shot out are now a great big HAROOMBOOOM which sounds like a mortar shell going off rather than the 'shotgunny' sound the old system made...if that makes any sense?
Im off to have a lie down now.

But whats all this talk of velocity is much needed in NA exhaust systems and as such some backpressure is normally the unwanted results of trying to gain increases in exhaust velocity? (from the mouth of a Greddy engineer, Jay Kavanaugh)

Hey, get up you slightly-overweight (but not much, big and beautiful

I had a bespoke system from Haywood and Scott made in stainless in the end.

ACT sports silencers to replace the cats at 2.125", then 2.5" straight pipes mid section to the back boxes which are the same visual construction as sports exhaust. the from the boxes, 3" with additional silenceing in the tailes so the bore is really 2.5" all the way throught
Result was a bespoke system that should be bent in all the right palces for my car, no stress.
DB measure from H&S at 101db at a constant 4000rmp. I recon I can get this down to 97-98 if I change the sports silencers, to 2.5" from the manifols, but increase the packing. Should give the same flow from the mailfolds as they are near 2" and not too much restiction.
Cost £600 + vodka bespoke system in stainless, no restiction in the mid section, and be able to track the car if needed at 98db.
Paul has my car right now, so I will release figures later, but it was 428bhp with the old cr@p system, should see 435+ hopefully nearer 440.

Im not very good with sound recordings/vids and all that sheite, but I'll see what I can do when we get the car on the rollers. Otherwise I'll have to tow you behind on a skateboard with a sound recorder thingymajig

No idea about the gains on the header experiments, mostly coz I havent got a scooby doo what you're talking about

it was wanted! my pot was not wanted and I got it for free!
Definitely do the recording, I know a lot of people say exhaust noise means nothing, but its not about how loud it is, its about how well it represents the engine tune, music! ie. fezza 'braaaaaa' tubbies!
This is going back 2 last year september, i recall tim saying he's doing a lot of work on different size primaries and stuff... well if you're not in the know then you're fockin as useful as a used johnny!
No idea bro.
I do know, one of the reasons Tim sold me his old system, was he was going to have a tinker with a new system. Said summat about cherry bombs in the middle (middle of what Im not quite sure).
Probably make your ears and nose bleed
Whats the difference between a tyre and 365 used johnnies?
One's a Goodyear....the others a f@ckin' GREAT year

lucky sod!But the current bird he's shafting is 'pin-up' material

Just had an SP system fitted at Torque RVT.
Although it costs a bit, Im more than happy with it. If you use the car everyday its essential as its a lot quieter in the cabin than the previous sports exhaust I had but still loud enough to put a smile on your face. Also and some what surprisingly its made the car a lot more refined. The judder around 2000rpm around round abouts has almost disappeared. Im also now able to pull away smoothly with hardly anr revs at all, which for some reason I couldnt do with the old system I had.
Oh, and by the way at idle mine now gurgles like a decat Griff or Maxum speedboat with a 5L inboard.
EDDIT* The fit is amazing too, sits perfect in the reassesses.
