996tt (2001 29k miles)
Every so often when deaccelerating in second gear it will "jump" out of gear. Have been advised by OPC that this could be the second gear synchro playing up and that the gearbox may need rebuilding. Car has full OPC warranty and I am led to believe that this issue will be covered.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and what was the outcome?

TIA

Not the same car but had 2nd gear issues with my 2003 Boxster S. Was told by the specialists that it was the well known issue of the '2nd gear syncro' and would need a rebuild, costing £k's.

Car had OPC warranty and following stripdown and inspection whole new gearbox was fitted. Just relieved that I had the OPC warranty.

My car only has 28k on the clock.

Good luck.

Good luck, but don't be supprised it they say it's not covered - wear tends not to be.
I know people with Porsche Warranties that have had to pay themselves.

My GT3 had gearbox problems after 20k miles jumping out of and not going into 1st gear, it was fixed under extended warranty by OPC with no suggestions at all that it wouldn't be covered.

Nonsense. A failing synchro is not wear and tear and it will be covered.

Mike at Sports & Classic rebuilds these. OPCs can only replace it, which is of course very dear.

I may be wrong but I think that the TT box is made to be servicable, as opposed to Boxster and 'normal' 996s which aren't made to be (unless you're Mike wink )

Had similar problems with a new gearbox with 1st, eventually traced to the linkage as it hadn't been engaging the gear properly.

Not sure about the last point, but I know Mike gets his Boxster and 996 gearbox parts from the States.

More info and statistics on the TT jumping out of gear for the OP here http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/showthread.php?...

It's a common problem (one of the GT2s I test drove last year suffered with the same issue too )

Thanks for the advice guys (and Tara). Car is booked in at Mid Sussex OPC in a weeks time. They have said they may need it for at least a week and have given me a 3.4s Boxster Tip to play with.
Will let you know the outcome.

Is the problems only symptom that it pops out of second gear under load ?

There have been reports on here of people struggling to engage second gear when cold (a common issue on TT's) so is that a differnet issue - ie sort of "normal" and nothing to worry about and the only time to worry is when its popping out of 2nd gear ?

IIRC the 'boxes normally pop out of gear on the overrun (or when coasting up to a junction) as opposed to under load.

I had the same problem in m 996tt X50. They rebuilt the box with £6k of new internals. As I understand it this only problem happens in the X50 and GT2 boxes!

UPDATE - OPC Mid Sussex had the car for a couple of days and it would not play ball. It refused to pop out of gear regardless of the amount of provocation it was given. The Technician said the box felt good and tight (keep it clean) and that until they could see it jumping out they were reluctant to strip it down. Even the throw into third seems fine now. Not sure if I have been fobbed off or not but it does seem perfect at the moment so guess I will see how things go.
He did say that they had a few gearbox rebuilds in and they had all been covered under warranty.

On an aside the 3.4S Tippy Boxster they loaned me was a bit of fun. Glad to have the turbo back though

NEW UPDATE

The 996tt went back to OPC Mid Sussex this week as the occurence of it jumping out of 2nd gear was getting more frequent.

The technician (Gron, nice guy) encountered the problem before he had got off the OPC forecourt. The gearbox has now been stripped and it is a problem with the 2nd gear synchro hub. Cost to fix this is c £4k. Is it covered by warranty? Thankfully it is.

I am also fortunate as the car does need a new clutch. Normally OPC would charge £2,349 for this. The recognised Indies were quoting between £1,500 and £1,800. OPC are only charging me for the parts, no labour as the gearbox is out for the warranty work. Cost to me £740 + VAT.

Will I be renewing my warranty in 2 months time? I can think of around 5,000 reasons why I should.

Well well well. The only one laughing now is our friend with the new clutch and gearbox, eh?
