Clutch Master Cylinder
Discussion
I need some quick advice if possible. I have got a new cylinder and it has the nylon cap. Jonny has told me that it is possible that I may need to flare the end of the fluid pipe because of imperial/metric ...
The only explanation I can put to that is that the thread for the pipe adaptor (what is the thing that fastens the pipe in called??) could have changed in the later cylinder. The cyl that I will be taking off is one with the old style very coarse round thread for the cap (which is aluminium) so does anyone know if the old pipe end will simply screw into the new cyl or do I need a new bit etc??
Advice would be appreciated or it may end up stuck outside at a friends house tomorrow (that is assuming it does eventually stop raining long enough to do the job?) in bits and wet weather
rather than back in the garage fixed.

Hi Dave - from what you say the one you had a problem with may have been the slave cyl as that is certainly in a tighter spot and I've heard about people having to grind bits off or similar? The master cyl I have is certainly the same in terms of size etc and would fit no problem as far as I can see (I do need to swap the push rod over but that is no problem)as there is nothing to stop it (unless the pipe thread is different?? - but then it would still 'fit' on the car) so maybe all the info I have that says it is a direct swap is correct. Certainly whilst I am no expert on screw threads the thread looks like I would have expected it to so fingers crossed ...

Thanks Dave - no reply as yet but I think the thread on the new cyl is probably OK. It does seem to be as I would have hoped and a friend who "knows about things" has looked and thinks its OK as well so fingers crossed .. (we could be wrong though but I suspect not)
(I was hoping to have done the job by now but still short of some other stuff and want to do all the jobs at the same time so hopefully in the next few days...)

We tried to fit the new cylinder this evening and whilst it was fine in every other respect the thread for the output pipe olive /adaptor is smaller so the current pipe didn't fit!! What a pain - why Girling have the same part number when the fit is different is beyond me
In the end we swapped the guts from the new cylinder into the old one as the bore seemed to be fine but it was an expensive way to do the job as I could have got a kit much cheaper and I don't get the new nylon cap which would be much better....
Mutter, mutter ...

PS At least I'm not getting the wet foot bit now with fluid on my shoe ..
