Has anyone fitted one of these?

I was thinking about putting one on the Chimaera, but with a twist, I was wondering if I could link or replace the lights behind standard tachometre with red ones, so the whole dial would glow red when coming up to shift time.

I know I'll be able to hear when to shift blah, blah, it's just a bit of fun biggrin

Does anyone know if you can get LEDs that can show both white and red? Then I could have the dial be white when the lights are on...

Does this make sense or is it me just typing rubbish?

All opinions and comments welcome, technical help would be better wink

Combination LEDs are available, but not in red/white. You could mount the lamp in the tachometer behind the spare red indicator at the bottom. It's not used in the RV8 engined cars, but the Cerbera uses it as a [would you believe] shift change indicator!

I would say it would be very difficult for you to see you rev counter glow red in the daytime. I had one of the units you are suggesting in my old Westy and it was bloody bright when the LED came on. Dispursing that light over the whole areas of the rev counter IMHO would be very diffuclt to see. As for having it white when the lights are on.....scratchchin could take some thinking about.

For info, I have one of these in my Chim...

The control box sits up under the dash, it takes its feed off the back of the tacho and the 4 shift lights sit just left and above of the fan rotary switch. Can post a pic if you like...

Am I right in thinking there is an example of a 'change up' light arrangement in the bible?

To my mind the reason for a shift light is so you can see it without taking your eyes off the road, Halfrauds do one for 40 quid which needs no connection to the tacho and just plugs into the ciggy lighter, but of course you can cut the plug off and wire it in properly.

Cheers Nick, can you pop a picture up so I can see what it's like. thanks. I'm just wondering if there's a place for it more directly in front of you, in your line of vision scratchchin

There is, but you don't want it to be. The LEDs are bright as hell. In your direct line of vision they're a bit too much quite honestly. It's best to tilt it off line slightly, or poistion it away. It's still bloody bright in the corner of your eye. In fact, I have been thinking of putting a switch on the -ve line so I can switch it off in the dark. With the sequential, you can set it up as you wish, but in my case the first light comes on about 3k, then 3.6, 4.2 and 5.

If you're making "reasonable progress" smile it can be a bit of a pi$$er when it's dark with this bright led in your face all the while. Preferences, preferences...

I'll see if I can whack a pic on later today.

Cheers

Rich,

Here's the pic.

It was difficult to get a good shot without shed loads of glare from the dash. If you can't quite see, let me know and I'll take another in decent daylight.
I couldn't get them to illuinate at this time of night I'm afraid, a bit to noisy to be revving up to 5k with everyone else's nippers in bed! I can do later if you wish.
