Hello all,

Newbie here (at least to posting - I'll admit I've been lurking around for some time). I got my 4.0 griff back in April and have had pots of fun since but recently it's started giving me one or two teasers and being new I need some help.

Yesterday I took it out for a run with a friend - no problems, all good fun. Parked up and a few hours later went to pick the wife up. Started OK and ran for about 400 hundred yards before spluttering to halt like it'd run out of petrol. Car now won't start and I can't hear the fuel pump priming.

I've changed the relay and fuse as on the fuse diagram with no success. What else can I try - could it be the fuel cut off switch?

Thanks for any help

do you have any electrics at all when you turn the ignition on?

Hi- I'm the man's brother for my sins.

As I understand it he has power and can get the starter to turn over but can't hear the fuel pump priming as he normally would.

Not surprisingly, this makes me suspect a fuel pump problem and, looking at previous posts, the fuel pump relay seems a likely suspect.

I'm told he has a "fuel pump relay" marked on his fuse box and this is not at fault (he's tried a replacement). However from my V8S I know that there are two loose relays attached to the wiring loom which is attached to the ECU. My understanding is that one of these is for the ECU and one for the fuel pump. From speaking to him, his Griffith seeems to have the same set up i.e. two "flying" relays.

Is one of these related to the fuel pump in the Griff? If so, can anyone give me a reference/tell me where I can get one as I don't have access to either his car or mine at the moment to check....?

It also seems from some of Peter's (GreenV8S) earlier posts that there could be a simple solution of just reseting the ECU, but again, I don't currently have access to the car to try this so would appreciate any other potential avenues to try.

All advice greatly received (otherwise there's a rather large hill I'm going to have to push it up)

Thanks

Harvey

I had this problem a few years ago.

Try switching the two Bosche fuel relays over - they are in the loom that sits on top of the battery - the Bosche relays are silver with a diagonal red stripe.

If just swopping them over doesn't work get a couple of new ones - can be got from a LR specialist.

Easy to reset the fuel cut off although i doubt its that. open glove box and feel in over the back and you should feel it there. A rubber covered button.

You could try hard wiring the pump to prove the wiring?

I had a similar problem today. I hit a kerb and the car didn't start afterwards. First suspect was the fuel pump relais, but they were fine. Fortunately I read many PistonHeads topics and remembered the fuel cut out switch, which proved to be the problem! I was lucky to find it. It fell out when I was inspecting the loom.

could be dodgy connections on the fuel pump itself , check them out and give a good clean up, this has caught me out in the past

Just an up date. I got the car started last night - as dingg suggested it was corroded contacts on the fuel pump, scrabbled around under the car and gave them a clean and hey presto she started. Isn't a cheap quick fix tremendously satisfying?!
