just on my way home with my dad in his car behind we i took him to collect it. i was cut up on a roundabout by a blue fiesta st with white stripes i hooted and gave a coffee bean sign and carried on i was sitting at 60 in a 50 ok i know but thats not the point for about 1 mile this blue fiesta was behind hooting flashing and waving his arms. i came up to some 3 lane traffic lights in the outside lane my dad in the middle when this fiesta then cut my dad up and came next to me hooting as i opened my window he said he is a off duty police office and will be reporting me i said i should be reporting you for cutting me and my father up then drove off as the lights went green

so the question is

1) can a offduty officer flash hoot etc and expect me to stop ( in the end he pulled next to me at lights)
2) he flashed something at me for about a second i wouldnt know what a badge looks like but can only presume was one.
3) whats he going to report me for ? calling him a nugget for cutting me up for doing 60 in a 50?
4) whatever he reports me for will it legally stand?

also just to add he didnt read any rights etc it was a 10 second conversation if that as the lights went green.

thank for any help and advise

Thats not an off duty police officer. Thats a complete , and you should report him. A blue Fiesta with white stripes may well ring bells around your local station.

I find it strange that a sensible man in a sensible job should even have to ask the question!

Sorry, what I was getting at is that you were slightly taken in by the "I`m off duty BiB" line. My answer would hve been "that`s lucky as I`m an off duty burglar"

Audible warning of approach, or annoyance?

Why bother? Can lead to physical nastiness from the other driver.

i had to swerve out of my lane due to him cutting me up so i would say annoyance, well fine the coffee bean can lead to nastiness but it didnt.

it doesnt matter who it is the queen, a copper, joe public or anyone if they cut someone up they will get a hoot etc

I see numpties doing daft things on a daily basis, but there's no way I'd identify myself as an off-duty BIB to them. I seriously doubt any other off-duty BIB with their wits about them would do so either. If someone's driving was so bad I felt something needed to be done, I'd call it in on the 9's (I'm talking about potential DIC etc).

I wouldn't be too worried about this. Me thinks red mist for both of you.

Assuming he was off duty BiB was he also driving with a second BiB sitting alongside him, or in fact someone that could verify the evidence he presents to you.

Now you know that you yourself have a witness, do you think that the evidence you and your father could present would paint a picture of high standards in police work when it comes to the bahviour of this BiB, because the description you gave doesn't suggest that.

If you're worried go to your local Police station and make a statement first.

You mean IF he was an off duty BIB and IF he reports you...
Don't sweat it. He was/is probably some jerk who who didn't like the tone of your sign language and his only contact with the Police is watching Road/Street Wars and The Bill.biggrin

Police officer are duty bound to take their job home with them. How much they do or not do off duty is down to their moral compass if you like. However if is possible if you do not act when off duty to face disciplinary action

Twazaks exist. Don't join the twazaks by giving the old Stinkfinger (which ist prosecutable offence in all German speaking countries wink)

Just chill, murmur twazak und get on with the pleasure of driving. wink

You were at 60 in 50? rolleyes Tut! wink

So unless he was in uniform - I think he cannot do anything. I seem to understand from all posts on this site from the BiBs on board und relatives who are also BiBs that BiB can only pull if in uniform. A plain clothes one cannot do so. wink Nor can an off-duty one. I think they can inform "uniformed" if their professional opinion deems the standard of behaviour warrant this though. I am sure lieber von will roll up to bang me to right if recalling incorrectly wink what I read in past wink

Had a collision occurred because he "cut you up" - a court may rule in YOUR favour even though you above speed limit. Did he indicate? Give any sign he check you in his "blind" spot?

I do actually find COAST help spot these twazaks anyway. Avoiding conflict/collision by adjusting speed/position/gear - even letting the twazak that vital gap, drawing breath und just realising that he more a twazak than you are on this occasion wink does help.

Evaluate in your own mind objectively too. Did you see him? Was your position at the roundabout cutting him out from direction he wanted. If your nose in front then he should have conceded und moved in behind you but two wrong like what he considered to be "aggressive" did not help anymore than his cut in help. What could you have done to assist him to his desired exit from this roundabout?

COAST/IAM/Advanced Driving... it not about speeding (even though I admit to enjoying a spirited drive when possible wink - usually in Germany or track of course (before von get wrongest idea winkpaperbag)

It about considering your safety & that of passengers in your car first und an obligation of duty of care towards all other road users coming a very close second. Now I say it in this order because 9 time out of 10 I have those whose lives I value higher than my own life in my car as passengers: my "kittens". My duty of care primarily towards their safety at all times. Other people come second to them.

I do doubt he was police officer given your account anyway. If he was hooting horn he was breaking the law anyway as you not supposed to do this willy nilly. (HC Rule 92 MUST only use horn to alert of presence. MUST NOT be used aggressively wink )

Suspect that was not off-duty plod at all, but a plum - most likely carries his son's Police Officer badge he got from the CHiPs Chrimbo set.

A copper won't pull you to tell you he is going to report you IMHO, why would he do so? He would simply take action using your reg. no. No need at all to advise what he is doing, that sounds like someone trying to scare you.
