Need some work done, early 911
Discussion
Need a specialist to carry out an engine rebuild
on my 1982 SC
Been through the monthly, and picked out some likelys, but
would really appreciate any that need avoiding like the plague
this is going to cost and I want to avoid the cowboys like last time

There are plenty of specialists I'm sure you'll get recommendations for, most/all of whom will do a good job. Mine would be Johnny at Unit Eleven www.uniteleven.co.uk for a few reasons:
1) knows the job exceptionally well with these engines - will give honest advice on what needs doing and what doesn't, based on experience of many years building air-cooled 911 engines for road and competition.
2) very competitive labour rate
3) because he know the job so well, he's very efficient and will probably do the job in as few hours as anyone (whilst still doing a proper thorough job)
4) he snapped his achilles tendon last week
and whilst off work for the moment, when he goes back the only type of work he'll be able to do for a while is engine builds, as they can be done sitting down!
Johnny looks after my 911 SC race car. It had a full engine re-build just after I bought it (the bottom end went when I was testing it with the seller). Budget was tight and the engine was found to be needing a crankshaft and barrels & pistons. Johnny found an engine from a fire damaged car at Prestige in Leeds for £500 which, when he checked, was found to have a good crank and 5 good barrels & pistons so he rebuilt mine with these parts. I raced the whole of 2005, which included many track days (it was my first season and I hadn't even been to most circuits before let alone raced on them), so the car did the equivalent of 2 seasons really. The engine never missed a beat, I finished every race, came 2nd in class and 3rd overall in the championship. I bet my costs were MUCH lower than those that beat me too.
Your profile doesn't say where you are in the country, and location may influence who you give the job to, but do consider sending the engine (or the whole car) to the garage you choose, as the transport cost may be negligible compared to the satisfaction (service/cost/quality etc) you should get having the job done right.

Marcus, thank you can I mention your name tomorrow
provided | can speak to him that is.
I'm Northampton, and coincidentally mine 'sounds' like a similar to yours, that coupled with a top end reconstructed using suspect barrels last year lead to a very unhappy engine so far
BTW is that your car I saw donuting outside a specialist on a vid a couple of years back

Not seen the vid, though wouldn't have thought it likely. I wouldn't necessarily mind, I just don't think they'd be bothered to record and post it anywhere.
I'm not sure who's answering the phone whilst's Johnny's off but if you get voicemail it will be being checked. There is another business run from the same premises and they share the office facilities etc so they will be keeping in contact with customers. Mention me by all means, though if you get through to Johnny he'll probably moan about me taking the car back I loaned him
His injury was to his left leg, so he needed an auto which I lent him. However, I then needed it back on Friday to lend to a customer, so Johnny's back on the sofa for now!

This is all I'm getting......
That looks like for some reason they first/front page is being displayed extremly small on your PC. There is an "Enter Site" button in the middle width wise and near the bottom - move your mouse over that area and see if it turns into a pointy hand thing, then click.I just checked and this is the next page: http://www.uniteleven.co.uk/about.asp and I would think everything will work fine from there. Fair to say it isn't the fanciest site you will have seen but while they're as busy with work as they are (large number of existing customers as well as 911 World & Porsche Post regular ads) there's not been much need to spend time on an exciting website - the content that is there is worth reading though.

I'm going through the same process at the moment....was recommended Unit11 too by someone off Impactbumpers.com - his 3.2 has just been topend rebuilt inc 964 cams, clutch, honed cylinders and power coating for a very keen price IMO - cheaper than a basic topend at London prices. Bit of a trek for me from SE London but worth considering for you perhaps. I may think about it myself in all honesty.
I'm contemplating using JAZ or RGA who are London based. Suggest you give a few other air cooled specialists a shout too.....Tuthills, RSR Engineering, BS Motorsport to name a few. JAZ's price included injector overhauling and con rod bolts and bearings, the latter being possible without splitting the case....don't be told otherwise.

Here it is,
http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines
dunno' what about the 80's cars, they looked at my boss'
944 when he managed to blow it up
think he said the end result was worth the wait
work-wise
good luck

Yeah, Autofarm are very good but pretty expensive. They specialise in early 911s and have been around forever. If you want it done properly, you'll have no worries there. But it won't be cheap. Another good alternative is Bob Watson.
Fair comment, especialy the expensive part. There are lots of specialist out there who are good, especially the older ones who grew up with SCs. Bob's a good guy.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
