e39 2000X 530d 111K breaks graunching and groaning

Hi guys, wondering if you can help!
Came down a big hill yesterday (real big - but not fast - on and off breaks - i know how to drive) and the breaks started making an evil noise at the bottom which did not go away after they cooled. I also could hear a noise when just driving along (a shhhh shhhh shhh). I reckon that it is coming from the front breaks only but the pad light has not come on. Also, the disks look a little scored.
One thing is that i dont know how to tell if the disks are excessively worn as there is no "lip" on the outside edge (or inside for that matter) of the disk.
Any ideas what could be wrong? I'm assuming it's the disks rather than the pads. Anyone know how much replacements cost inc fitting?
