Phumy:

As mentioned to you at the time the (maintenance information relating to tyre tread depths) instructions date back to the older paper book style workshop manuals, as opposed to the new Erwin and Elsa computer based systems of today.

I have to admit I no longer have these books, and this dates back to January 2005 when our entire business was flooded out in Carlisle, a similar situation to what the folk of Sheffield have faced in the last fortnight.

As I mentioned at the time, trust me I am correct on the info regarding Torsen.

On the other hand you could persuade people not to follow this advice out and also answer their requests for advice when they have problems later down the time line.

You appear to be trying to discredit me among fellow Pistonheaders when, as I mentioned in the thread you have supplied a link to, I am only trying to give honest advice to help.

Fellow Pistonheaders will I'm sure note you even tried to cheapen the name of my then employers by reading the previous thread.

I hope you can consider this matter "put to bed."

Yours etc.,

Andrew Dryburgh.

I was interested in the offer of the information, if you feel that i have tried to put you down, then thats a guilt complex that you have, i would never try to discredit you, you appear to be pretty good at it yourself.

I'm afraid not closed old boy, and I'm still dissappointed by your slightly confusing vendetta.

Your audacity at suggesting I have anything to be guilty about is beyond me.

Just please remember that I'm not the one who has left slanderous comments for all to see. And all this when you've never even met me or seen the cars I prepare and how. You will note I haven't made any comments about your character, as I would not stoop so low.

I can see why drybeer would take offence to be honest...

But regardless, this is infact a debate I would like to know the answer of. I have been told by many people running UR's, RR's, S2's and RS2's that when replacing tyres I should replace all 4 at once due to the torsen system being highly sensitive to tyres with more than 2mm of tread difference.

I don't stick to this but I do change both tyres on one axel at a given time. When I first got my car I took it around castle combe which put more wear on my front nearside tyre. Whilst driving it around for a few days afterwards I noticed that if I had the car on full lock (i.e. Parking or Driving around a mini roundabout) that the car would jump. After both front tyres were replaced I never had the problem again.

Edited for spelling.

Yes this is the point.

People who've been told the guidlines by their Audi dealer will be following the 2mm rule and having less tyre related problems and in later life of the car diff noise and problems by doing this.

My own current S4 is noticably quiter from the drivetrain when on fresh tyres all around for example.

As you rightly say, many quattro owners myself included follow this guidline and for this reason recommend it.

Certainly it does also make sense to replace both tyres on the same axle at the same time, particularly on the front as even if they fall within the 2mm, the difference can lead to steering pull in one direction or the other.
