What are the views on this then ?

Quoted from the november issue of design engineering.

"Derwant Thomson Scientific
Motor accidents involving the use of mobile phones are on the increase. This detection system (EP1130558) works on a similar principle to speed cameras, and detects the radio waves produced by a mobile phone in a moving vehicle. When detected, a camera is triggered to determine whether the driver is in fact using the phone without a hands free kit or whether someone else in the car is using it."

So big brother gets even bigger !

it had to happen.

What about tinted windows?!!

What happens if your passenger is using the phone, and you are scratching your head ?? (looks like holding phone to ear).

I see Bliar not getting in next time, but agree in principle.

Sounds a little strange to me mel. Have you any more info or links on this as i cant seem to find anything on it on the web.

If the device takes a photo when ever the precence of GSM frequency is detected then surely its going to be a nightmare to go through all the photos it takes to find the odd person clearly show using a phone and driving. Passengers using a phone would set it off and even pedestrians could i guess. It would also need to take 2 photos either side of the driver otherwise 'i was scrathing my ear' would be an easy get out.

Maybee the intention is there for a safety device but it seems to be far too laboutr intensive to get good results....

Suits me

The amount of people swerving around and generally driving badly whilst using a mobile phone (hands free or not) gets on my ti*s. If it serves to reduce mobile phone usage whilst on the move then all well and good.

The big brother thing?

Depends on how you view it, I suppose. If you're doing nothing wrong, is it really an issue?

Reminds me of the civil liberties groups shouting off when the Government talked about ID cards - I can't see the problem with this either if it reduces crime etc.

Great idea in principal but I think it would be far too difficult to administer.

All mobiles 'poll' their network every few minutes to check CEL availability so mobiles that are just sat there not being used by anyone would set this thing off.

Given that 60% of the population have phones, so that means 60% of drivers generally have them on their person and consequently 60% of cars will have one in, excluding passengers, that last camera just before the chiswick ramp on the M4 will be going off almost perpetually and if the film is £2K a roll that thing is going to have a burn rate higher than a dot com!

I doubt it. These things are dreamt up by faceless civil servants way below the political appointee level - home office scientific department or somesuch - and then get pushed into service by local/parish councils hell bent on PC crusades so they get to see their own name in print. Sad...

Can't give that much more info it's basically in the "patent watch" section of design engineering journal and the info is supplied by Derwent Thomson Scientific. I haven't had time to search the web but a good starting place would be

www.derwent.com/engineering

I would scan it and post the article but the scanner is tits up if wanted I'd send it to Ted just ask. Oh yes I think the EP1130558 ref may be the patent application number.

It will never ever happen. Far too many problems to overcome.

yeah I agree, technically it is a possibility but think of the admin required to support it. Begs the question of why can't manufacturers produce vehicles with built in hands free stuff instead of cupholders and ashtrays, radio cassettes at an easy to operate height, buttons and switches not obscured by the steering wheel etc, etc. People are not going to stop using them so make it safer for them to do so

So presumably car stereos, heaters and children will also be under attack next. As for Blair not getting in next time well that depends the motorist certainly needs some representation.
