Dropped the DTM in to my local Dealership for a service today. Whilst waiting for a lift to work I had my usual poke round the showroom.
Skulking in the corner was a car under a cover, upon enquiring and asking the chap to pull the cover off, low and behold, an A5
Immediate impression? It looks like the lovechild from a BMW 3 Series Coupe and a small Merc CLK
(it was in a mid-blue if that makes any difference?). Bangle esque creases down the lower side of the car. Nice (blade) wheels.
Fantastic quality inside, good sized boot. For me, having 2 young children with the need for child seats, Im not sure if there is enough room in the back (although Im told an adult can fit in there...then again, they say the same thing about my A4!) and Im sure the little dahlings would kick the crap out of the back of the front seats in no time.
Im sure it will sell very well, but it (the TDi version) just didnt look 'mean' enough for my liking. I think. Im sure it will grow on me and am looking forward to seeing it in other colours.
Having said that, theyve invited me back this weekend for a short 'launch' test drive or the following week for a full test drive, so we shall see how it goes then (obviously the diesel seems to be the one to go for initially).
What say you lot? Some of you must have had a sneak preview?

Saw it at the Canary Wharf Expo, and thought it was pretty good. As you said, great interior and bullet-proof build quality. I have the 3.0TDi in the A6, and that's not too shabby on the performance, so I suspect the A5 will shift well.
I know what you mean about the "understated" looks though, just how subdued can you get. Obviously the S5/RS5 will be monsters...
...good for the small family who wants smart performance, not butch!

I like it, the brochures came in the post the other day, upon looking at the figures of the tdi and s5 there really isnt a great deal in performance between the two plus you get the added mpg with tdi. I think its a smart looking car interior is nice. Wonder if/when/what the RS5 will be like.
Well, when I returned to collect my car from service the blue A5 TDi had morphed into a black S5
with bigger wheels. (black is much better than the (iirc) mugello? blue)
Looks slightly more aggressive and the interior was even better than the TDi car, but still not overtly 'sporting'. Maybe Im looking too much into the sporting side?
Then again, an S4 doesnt really light my fire looks wise. Maybe its just me?

I do know what you mean - but the whole point of most Audis is that they are COVERTLY sporty.

Interestingly the Blue is called "Aruba Blue" pearl effect - I like it, and in Sport spec the 3.0TDi has a nice meaty presence.
Naturally the RS cars are more aggressive looking, however Audi have not confirmed that there will be one.
The S5 as you rightly say has a "j'ai ne ce pas" about it in comparison.
Both drive awesomely well, and our launch this sunday has both cars booked solidly.
From what you say a 3.0TDi Sport in black would suit you!

No, not black! I lurve black cars...but I am way too lazy to keep one clean.Id like to see one in Saraha Silver though, with black leather
And give me a small carbon lip on the front, maybe a tasteful vent somewhere
If Im allowed to be picky, I dont like the back windows/top of the hip. The C pillar is it? Just looks odd, sort of CLKy?
Being an avid "Audi Person" I should be exited, but I just can't take to the shape, there is something bulbous and bruised about the look. Poor room at the rear and a high window line accentuate this blown front and rear for me. I have not booked a test drive, for now I will stick to my new RS4 and see if the A5 grows on me.

Yes - interestly we've just been lining up UR quattro, MB quattro, and S2 quattro coupes next to the new car for our launch event, and the rear side window has the approximately same shape in them all, so it begins to make sense when you look at the "lineage" if that's the correct word.I think they wanted to make sure it wouldn't look the same as the BMW 3 coupe at the rear end (which it does a little at the tail lamps).

Funnily enough the dealer showing me round the car pointed out that very point about the rear tail lamps. I hadnt actually 'seen' that until he pointed it out to me.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
