Driving past Maranello in Egham this weekend I was suprised to see the new coupe in all its glory on display, apparently there is one car making its way around the dealers (it is back in Egham next weekend)..
This car is absolutely stunning!!! I am glad I didn't have my credit cards with me as I would have dropped a deposit down on the spot (apparently wait list till about April)
Apparently most cars are being ordered with 19" wheels and a few other extras, meaning prices in the mid 80's...ok more expensive than a stock 911 but at that price (and apparent exclusivity with less than 400 cars due in the first 12 months)it compares well to aston's, jag xkr's, audi r8's and 911's..

if you get a chance go see!!

Saw it at GFoS. It looks very good.

If it's as good as (or dare I say, better then) the 997; what with the R8 being acclaimed to be a 911 beater, is it time for Porsche to consider replacing the 911 as we know it with a car that's not rear engined?

Given that they sell nearly 30,000 911's a year I doubt it.

Should mention the Maserati is an 'almost genuine' 4 seater and bl***y big! So the 911's place as 'the best sports (sic) car' is safe, but as a GT.....

Well, the new Maser is pretty much (and it IS prettywink) a "Quattroporte Coupe". It's sheer size and weight will make it anything but an 911 beater. A GT perhaps but not a hard core sports car.

Is it right for Porsche to only replace the 911 when sales fall? Shouldn't they strive to make the best usable sports car that they can?

I'm certainly not knocking the 911. But there is a day that it will cease production (be it 5, 10, 25 or 50 years down the line). It's been the best car in it's class for a generation. If that is now changing, should Porsche sit back and ignore it, because sales are still good? I think this forum will become a rather different place, filled with rather different people if they do.

Even if the Maserati is the best car ever released in history nobody outside Italy will pay any attention because I'm sure everyone who drives it will say the same old "lovely car, shame it'll probably collapse in three weeks" line...

As I have said before Porsche NEEDS to start improving the 911's aesthetics,
the Maser is fabulous looking, as is the AMV8 etc.

911 will out live all the pretenders to the throne,in what ever shape or form, what will all these mazzas and Audis look like in 5 years time, out dated cos they copy form and design from other cars in their ranges,ie new Audi TT looks ok but look at the old one now... Old 911s still look great what ever their age.....Obviously this is my opinion......

Surely beauty is in the eye of the beholder? I have a 997 and I think it's beautiful as is the AMV8.

Next time up it's either a 911 turbo, a Gallardo or a Prodrive AMV8 - all fantastic cars and great looking but in very different ways.

Until now, sales from any Maserati never appeared to be threatening, and it'll take a shift in perception before the 911 is in danger from that manufacturer imho.

Now if it was a german manufacturer there'd be more risk. Notice that BMW and Mercedes, for some reason, never went out and developped a 911 beater. Something I always wondered about. The 911 is doing so well, is there some unspoken agreement not to hit on it? Whatever happened to the Z8 after all these years? (Not a 2+2 neither, just a roadster).

The Audi R8 may represent more danger. However I look at it and think nice toy, hope it'll not be forgotten in 10 years.. Whereas 10 year old Porsches still generate more press than any other car from this year (wonder why lol).

Thats quite simple ...Porsche 10 years ago produced cars with no peers, lost money and had small sales volumes..they decided that profit irrespective of quality was important to survive, hence produced Boxsters' and 996s' in huge quantitities to keep them manafacturing.Cost of this decision is massive depreciation on new models..a 997 version designed to look like a 993(because everyone now knows the 996 look was a desperate measure)and now unfortunately people have realized that the 997 is just another reasonably quick average quality mass-produced car..the 997 will never have the kudos that 964/993 have because of the aforementioned reasons. To lean on 'old-Porsche' values and exclusivity as a future plan is extremely flawed..Porsche have changed their product and target audience totally so longer term they will compete with the run-of-the-mill manafacturers..
