say lg, your not having the best of luck with that car, hope your fixed soon
Yes and no mate. I bought it for a song and it's old with a lot of miles. Everything that has broken or worn out has been reasonable for a car of this vintage (except the ball joint, but that was down to a previous owner fitting the wrong part). To compound things I tend to drive it quite hard, so the combination of aged motor (and driver) and at least a weekly thrashing means it's not getting the restful retirement it deserves.

May be worth a call to Richard at Dulfords, failing that Bernie the Gearboxman (www.gearboxman.co.uk) seem to be the specialist on GKN diffs.
Cheers Hamish - thanks a lot!
They've both said it'll be expensive. Can someone please suggest someone that'll give me a nice price please?

drove my Griff for about 18months with my GKN diff all S and no L before I managed to source a replacement.Yes, word was no crown wheels, and Dana didn't give a sh1t about GKN. Adrians version is a revelation, to me at least?

PS I have a spare, and I seem to remember Paul Allen had a spare as well, If you get stuck on bad bits I'd let you borrow my spare essential bits till you could get a replacement.

I have dealt with GKN direct for many years, more for the 4 HU are than the 12 HU. Steve was directed to them by me and I believe that they did a first glass job, he had good input to the people there and, paid in the region of 350.00 inc.

In '94 when my new Griffith diff was slightly noisy, the TVR main dealer who said that he would remove, check and reseal the diff as it had a minor leak, was told to take a hike, THEY insisted on a full rebuild to find out why the diff had failed....I have had many stories from their customer in the past.

Hamish, is there a risk more damage would be done to the crown wheel or pinion if driven? It's not too bad at the moment, but if I'm going to risk catastrophic damage I'd not risk it. After all, it may be just the bearings at the moment. (It's not been disassembled yet, so don't know where the problem is.)

As "The Daddy" says, you are doing more damage to it if it making a noise. In my situation the diff itself is fine, its just the lsd thrust washers have worn so it no longer engages the diff lock.LordGrover said:

I didn't think Bernie charged quite that much, but I'm pretty certain that as a matter of course his rebuild includes strip/clean and all new bearings and LSD. Daddy are you sure you are referring to the GKN Diff, I was under the impression the diff had to be stripped to get the bearings out anyway.
If Dana do have a supply of the major parts that would be excellent, it has been a major concern to many of us with GKN Diffs. The term 'hens teeth' and sharp intakes of breath have been frequently used in relation to crown & pinion parts for these cars, from several illustrious sources. It would certainly be worth qualifying on these pages LG.

My understanding is that these parts are ex-stock for in-house rebuilds (perhaps that is where the hens teeth aspect comes from).Dave
I don't see anything wrong in that, the racing boys have been using the GKN rebuilding service for years.

Paul didn't say anything of the kind, stop putting words in his mouth
You seem to have glossed over the bit that they replace the Limited Slip bits as a matter of course, which I assume they do for good reason (CTS that is). £400 for parts and labour (not forgetting the dreaded!) is not excessive in your trade
, and particularly as these chaps don't hark from the Wild West. Face it you probably would pay more for an Oil Change at a Fezza dealership..
Dave
ETA: forgot to mention... The state of the diff is a significant element in how nice the cars feel to drive BTW.
