Assaulting a Policeman - Likely Sentence / Fine?
Discussion
The son of a friend has recently been arrested and charged with assaulting a policeman. I have little doubt he is guilty, he also has some previous history of driving offences and what I would describe as "chav" type criminality i.e. drunk and disorderly etc. What could be the likely outcomes assuming he is found guilty? I have advised friend it is very serious she seems to be playing it down and considers it a minor inconvenience.
I would appreciate any input.

When a person I know got charged with assault on a public sector worker I was told the maximum sentence is 5 years imprisonment, although it was ABH if that's different.Summary trial: 6 months impr. Fine of £5000 or both.

He SHOULD be given a proper sentence. Violent crime is violent crime, and isn't acceptable without SEVERE provokation (e.g. someone properly hitting your missus or kid).
Moreover, the police should be seen as inviolable, and violent crime against them doubly punishable...not because they're any the less able to protect themselves (quite the contrary), but because they need to be able to go about their jobs without fear.
But agreed...the daft mags will probably tag him so he can burn it off, put it on the cat, then go to the pub and start another fight!
