Fan query

Im currently doing my head gaskets due to over heating and been looking at various cooling threads. My car is a 1996 4.0, My fans are mounted directly to the rad, but in other threads it says there should be mounted to plastic shrouds, and I have seen 2 other chims and they do have these.

Are mine missing or would it be they ran out that week at the factory type deal :-p

Early cars just had 2 strips top & bottom that the fans mounted to. Straightforward replacement with the integral shrouded varieties is a worthwhile upgrade to enhance fans & prevent hot air re-circulation IMHO. I have the idea that the fans were upgraded at the same time as well, adding a relay/fuse for each fan in the fusebox is worthwhile anyway. Mine seem to run happily on 2x25A fuses (surprisingly - but I thought it better to start with lower fuse expecting to have to upgrade..)
