... why dont sony or microsoft just do their own version of the "wiggle stick". I mean how hard can it be, and doesn't that just blow away the nintendo gimic?

The PS3 Sixaxis controller has motion sensitivity built into it already, MS have mentioned they might do it, but as a gamer I prefer a regular control pad.

The wiimote is nothing new but...

What is new is its done well and comes with the console, and is the major selling point. Every game can(has to) use the wiimote.

No tacked on controler will gain enough momentum to be centeral to the box, like the wiimote is.

Also no hjalf hearted botched job like the sixaxis will do either, Sony are a me too company this gen.

The main problem is, unless they release their new wiggly controllers for free of charge, not everyone who owns a 360/PS3 will own one. If there isn't a big enough market for waggling, developers won't make games that utilise the functionality. Take the PS2's EyeToy for example, maybe it sold around 3million units worldwide, if you're a business wanting to profit, would you make a game that only has 3million potential customers or 120million? (I think that's what the PS2 has sold to date).

The only way for this to work is to have waggle in from the start, late release peripherals never sell, Sega learned the hard way.

I still think its worth releasing, as mentioned about the Sixaxis controller has some degree of motion detection going on already so hopefully it will not be that difficult to develop and update the firmware etc.

From a competitive point of view, it sounds like a great PR win - take some of the steam out of the Wii juggernaught. Also I would have thought it would make it easier to port games on Wii to PS3/Xbox - which could be functional either with a standard controller or with the wiggle stick. Bearing in mind the PS3 is intended to have an 8-10 year life, just seams they would be giving too much away otherwise.

Just my tuppence worth, probably dont know a thing ... smile

As has been said it either needs to be a standard from the start or come with such a kick ass game that people will shell out for the game + controller (has anyone played guitar hero on a normal contoller? )

In theory its dead simple. The technology is simple and standards based so there is no reason why either Microsoft or Sony cannot do this too. But the problem is not with the electronics but with the games. Not all PS3 games have motion support and it takes years to get the big blockbuster games out and released!

Nintendo have a caught a leap on everyone else - it will take 1-2 years for the others to catch up and in that time Nintendo will have released a load of new games to make the gap bigger. The consoles are aimed at different markets and the constant sniping by the likes of Microsoft and Sony indicate that they are not looking to do anything soon.

The big thing from a financial point of view is that Nintendo makes money on each and every Wii sold. Sony will not make a profit on the hardware for a couple more years and Microsoft is only looking to break even on the hardware in Q3 / Q4 this year - 1 1/2 years into production!

Wow, didn't realise that!
To be honest with such a cheap console I would have thought that they would have struggled to break even, let alone make a profit!

I think the view that with the consoles (360 & PS3) already released without this mean that it will take several years until (if) they decide to join the bandwagon!

Oh well, back to Zelda! smile

IMHO I think the sixaxis is a good half way house, a good solid controler with a nice degree of motion sensing, Mrs hodgy is totaly addicted to a bloody stupid duck game and the only control that uses is to tilt the pad, seems to respond quite well, it also a nice addition in resistance to be able to shake somebody off if they grab onto you.

The wii is making a profit 'cos thety already had the unsold Gamecubes lying around in warehouses. The main cost to them is the duct tape.
