Ok, so i've just brought a cherished plate from a private seller, got the retention document, what do i need to do now to get the registration onto my car, a.s.a.p?. What docs do i need, where do i send them, etc etc ?. What happens with my Vehicle registration document, MOT, Tax disk, insurance docs etc, all currently with the old reg number on it. Lastly, what happens to my old reg number?. Many thanks.

as previously said... if the retention certificate hasnt got you as the nominee its no good to man nor beast

If it has take the following documents to your local registration office

1. Your V5 (reg doc) will go to swansea and a new replacement doc will be issued
2. MOT (if applicable) new one issued while your there
3. Copy of your current tax disc new one issued while your there
4. Your retention certificate (signed by the grantee) sent to swansea with ur V5

5, If the car is already taxed the DVLA Will not need your issurance docs, but you will need to inform your issurance co who will sort news docs out

All should be processed while you wait, you will be given a new tax disc and letter to get new plates made up

Your old reg goes back to the dvla but will most likey be reissued to your car when you remove the cherished plate in the future, but they can issue it to another vehicle if they so desire in which case another age reated number will be allocated at such time

It used to be that way but when I went to my local DVLA office (Wimbledon) last month they had introduced a new system and "while-you-wait" had been replaced by "you-wait-while-we-do" which translates to about 10-14 days until the docs arrive in the post. So you can either send the application and docs in or take them all into the office. Either way you get the new docs back in the post.

Does 'transfer' not include retention to vehicle?

I have just done vehicle to retention and it was a seven day service.

Retention off a vehicle is 7 days, but retention onto a vehicle is while u wait (basically you've waited yur 7 days when you put into onto retention)

I assume the private seller's name is on the retention document? He needs to fill in part of the form to nominate you as being the person with the entitlement to that number. If I remember correctly, once that document is sent back to you you either take it into your local DVLA office or send it off again to have your name put onto the document along with a fee.
Then as mustard says when you receive that back then you can go into the DVLA office and they will take your V5 off you and send you a new one in the post, they will change your Tax disc on the spot and give you a certificate to go and get your plates made (assuming that they are going to be fully compliant and BS marked)
Why are you bothered about your old number it just goes into the pot to be reissued I imagine (Unless you want to retain that for some reason in which case you'll need to get a retention document)

I've recently bought a "cherished plate" from a private seller. You need to get your name on the the document as a named nominee. This'll cost you, I think £25.00 notes. Bear in mind that the document will NOT be sent back to you - but the the person you bought it off. Yep welcome to blairs world - sorry brown now rolleyes
Absolutely crackers it you ask me - but hey ho thats how it works.

Once the guy you got it off has sent it back to you eek all you need to do is contact your local dvla office found here :
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/contactus/localoffices.aspx
I posted my stuff to them and got it back within a week.

Good luck smile
