Hi guys,

I was looking for some advise. I have been researching 996's cabriolets this week and really like the look of the C4s but it seems pricy compared to the basic C4. Would it be worth my while waiting for a turbo look-a-like or just taking the plunge?

My budget is ideally £35k, but i can goto £40/£45 if i really have to.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

I've been thinking about this for a while and eventually decided that it was worth spending the extra for a C4S. IMHO, the C4S Cab is the nicest of all the 996 shapes and the proportions of the car work beautifully.

In a (no doubt futile) bid to pre-empt all of the usual responses wink I freely admit:
The Turbo is a better car.
The Turbo is a better investment.
The Turbo has a more reliable engine.
The Turbo will keep you interested for longer.
The Turbo is the proper driver's car.
The C4S is all mouth and no trousers.
The C4S is for poseurs only.
I must be some sort of ladyboy to want a C4S Cab.

However, there are some deluded and misguided souls like myself who don't necessarily want a Turbo and, if you're one of them, I think the C4S is the dog's danglies!

Are you looking to change your 996 C2 to get a convertible specifically, if not I'd just keep your current car !

i'm picking up a TT today (hopefully), after initially looking at the C4S.

Needless to say when i asked about a C4S on here most people told me to to try a TT, the general opinion being that it's a better buy.

i'm hooked, it's by far and away the better car, and for the same year i'm paying 750 of yer quids more. In fact, my insurance is cheaper than for a C4S! OK, so servicing is a little more, but not by as much as people make out.

i think the only thing to be aware of is that, perhaps because of the perception they're comparatively expensive to run, TTs seem to be on the market a lot longer than C4Ss. I've heard that for every single TT a dealer sells, he can sell 10 C4S. My opinion is that the C4S is overpriced right now, and the TT underpriced.

go and try them both and see.

can't wait to pick my TT up!

I've just bought a C4S 5 years old £38,000ish (trade in of C2 so not sure of exact price), use daily so thought turbo too much of a beast, the 996 C4S is prettier than the 997, in my view. Have a 12 month max claim £5000 per claim warranty. Doubt you will get one for £35,000, might be worth looking at 993 models or C4 but the resale of the more standard models is becoming a concern. Porsche now mass produce so the C2 I had was very difficult to sell, the rarer the model the more demand.

The Turbo is a better investment??

I cant agree, note that these were selling for £92-£96k when new and are currently selling for £5k more for an equivalent C4S - There must be a reason for this, i have saw a 2000 TT for £38k which for me gives a hint to where the prices are heading - downwards. The 997 S for me has had a knock-on effect to the 996 TT prices and i assume that with BMW,AMG and Audi bringing out there own brand of "fast" cars is given the public more to choose from. Also read in an Autocar article that allot of TT buyers traded in there TTs for the 4WD Gallardo.

The C4S although an inferior car in all aspects to the Turbo seems to be the sensible mans option for the daily commute.

i wouldn't buy it as an investment, however i do believe the TT is going to lose less over the next couple of years than the C4S. It doesn't add up that you can get a TT for a couple of grand more (or 750 quid in my case!) than a similar C4S.

i can't fathom why TTs are so cheap compared to a C4S at the moment - anyone in the trade care to comment?

I strongly believe its the economy - the general public have more funds to pay for more and more expensive prestige cars, wither its an M6 or the up and coming M3,variety of AMGs,Audi R8's,Ferraris,Bentley Contis,Gallardos?

I am not exactly welll off and i would have never have thought 2 years ago that i would be contemplating buying a used TT or a C4S at £40k+ but i am and i assume there are a number of other people in my position, the facts are that all prestige cars are collapsing in price due to more people having the cash or finance - I saw a 2002 CL55 on the Autotrader at £24k!!(new price £90k+),and i would say that they are rarer than a TT although i stand to be corrected if someone has the figures.

I know all TT owners will try and rubbish my thoughts as they have probably paid top dollar for there cars a year ago and want/wish that the prices stabilise but i believe they wont. All IMO of course.

Just had a quick scan on the Classifieds and there are approx 50 TTs for sale compared to 30 C4S's.

I think they are relatively cheap because the looks of the car do not appeal to the average non-enthusiast... the spoiler and vents are just that bit too outlandish for some people - me included.

Interesting. A lot of people prefer the shape of the 996TT to the 997TT. Are Porsche making their Turbos more ugly with each incarnation?

I don't really think the 996TT can be classed as outlandish. Not when there are a other far more low slung finned-beasts about. Personally, considering it's performance I think it is anything but.

I don't know of any TT owner who purchased their car as an investment. I know a few who have bought them for what they believed to have been a good deal at the time, all things considered.

Personally I think if there is a preference for the C4S its because the potential owner is too worried about Turbo ownership. There seems to be a fair bit of myth that comes with Turbo ownership. Just imo.

I'm happy to be corrected on this, but surely if there are more people able to pay the entry price to sports car ownership, that will support the price? In other words, if you have 100 people who can afford a particular product (of which there is a finite supply), surely that means the product will achieve a better price than if there were only 10 potential purchasers?

I appreciate that the additional purchaes at the top of the market might mean that there are more TTs available to purchase, but this would surely only balance out the price support from the additional purchasers available?

I'll wait for someone who knows something about economics to tell me I'm talking arse...

By the way, when I said the Turbo was a better investment, all I meant was that if you buy a TT for £50k today, it will, in my view, be worth more in a year's time than a C4S that you buy for £50k today. I'm not suggesting that either would be likely to yield a decent financial return on your investment biggrin

Buy the turbo. OK there are less C4s's around but fewer people want them. IF you're going to take the plunge in to porker ownership you may as well jump in the deep end so that you know you've done it otherwise you'll always be wondering what would it have been like......

I broadly agree with Wanta996, but would say more people have more funds to pay higher depreciation bills.

We know there's an infinite supply of porkers just look at how many are sold now vs. 10 years ago, they will make as many as there is demand for unless it's got GT2 in the name ...

Just a thought, but didn't the original poster state he was looking at cabs???

If so there's a huge chunk of change between a C4S cab (45k and upwards) and a turbo cab 60k upwards.

For what it's worth, you could get a decent C4 cab for 35k plus and imho probably lose a bit less then you would on the 4s, if only because at circa 45k the 997 cabs will affect their value first.

But as this is my first post, what do i know hehe

ps hello by the way..

Believe it or not speed is not the top priority on every Porsche owners list.
The style the badge and the sound are far more important IMO.
Do TT owners really use all that extra power on the public roads, Different story if you use your Porsche for trackdays.
I have great fun in my C4S and find the power ample
will the new 997 C4S come in for the same treatment?
Have Porsche screwed up again???
I DON'T THINK SO

I love the look of the C4S and always thought I would have one, I still lust everytime I see one but I could not ignore the 400+ horses of the Turbo for very little more money....

for me it was about what makes me happy and that was big step up in performance from my 320ish BHP BMW which was very similar performance to the C4S.

Tahnsk for the feedback. yes it is a cab im after and TBF i think it will be a c4s - just love the shape!

Looking on autotrader i have seen a 40k TT replica and a 45k c4s - Having said that from what has been said, if i buy a c4s soon am i going to be really hit by depreciation?
