Hi

i am currently working for a large offshore company in the North Sea dealing with Geological cuttings and samples. I have done the work for a year now and have had enough. I have applied for numerous jobs and one has come through but there is no start date!

I have been talking with the guy at the new job about start dates etc but he cannot give me an exact date as the contract keeps getting pushed back. I am willing to wait for this job as its seems ideal! - A small company, good prospects, and onshore! The thing is i absolutly hate my job just now - I am away for 2 weeks at a time, usually less than 2 weeks off which means no time for anything and i am constantly expecting the phonecall to say "your away tomorrow". not good.

Aswell as that aspect, once i am offshore, the conditions can be pitiful - 4 man rooms, shared toilets, shared showers, poor food! On top of all this the office have messed me about in the past and i just want to put it all down to a bad experience.

Anyway, my question - Do i quit now, and work my notice then work for an agency on a lower income until (If) this job comes through or do i stick it out and wait for the word off the guy from the new job and then tell them to stick it?

Sorry about the long winded post but i have a bit of time on my hands and am pondering my position.

Cheers biggrin

Work your notice, and look for contracting in between.

There are geo and oil & gas recruiters out there. It might take a few hours work to find a good one but look at www.agencycentral.co.uk and on the job boards (including any industry specific to your industry of course) to find the recruiters who seem to be advertising.

Get registered for contract work. They'll advise you on how to sort out Ltd company status etc - it's all straight forward. Take a contract, knowing you can leave when the perm job comes through but stick with your current job until you've got a contract lined up. That's my advice. Surely there are contractors working on the rig who can recommend agencies to you etc. There is loads of contract work in petrochem and it's usually very well paid.
