That's funny, this morning I was wondering how many 911's Porsche are making now. My ride into work takes me through SW and central London and you can't move for the things.

I couldn't help concluding that Porsche have turned a neat trick by simultaneously increasing production whilst maintaining the perception of being a premium brand and the prices to go with it (£60k+ for a 6 cylinder with 325bhp is no bargain...). No wonder they're so profitable.

All good news for us second hand buyers though!

Spot-on, over priced mass produced cars which reflects in their second hand prices and the fact the dealers dont want to buy them back(unless they bite your hands off).Only way to avoid this is to buy old ones pre 996.smile

Yes best to go for one of the rare 993 models..they only produced 75000 of those!..as they last so long and 74999 are still on the road its difficult to see why they go for anything like 18 k to about 30k.
Given that people (with hair dryers) think that 996/997 are so badly made, you would think that those same people would buy one (996/997) take care of it and keep it long term. The value would be so much more than the 993 in future years because they will be so much rarer..given that they are so much crapier and will not last the course...Strange logic?.. If what we read on here is anything to go by only a small number will last the course.
My guess is the same people that are talking the 993 up now will be doing the same with the 997 in a few more (10) years.
Its all a classic case of mines the best no matter whick make or model it is!!! Happy days.
Having driven now a 993 for the first time, and owning a 9972s I really cant see what all the fuss is about with the 993..it simply cant hold a candle to the 997 in any departmment what so ever. I did 1000 miles in a day from Berlin to Manchester last week..steady at 130..150..175 mph for mile upon mile.
I know which car I would rather do it in...997 a total GEM! wink

Of course the 993 doesnt drive as well as a 997..a Rolex Daytona doesnt keep time as well as a Swatch, however one is rare and one is common...how can you ever get seriously interested in a 997 when the 998/999/whatever they call it comes out in 2 years time in 4 times the quantity..and a better car..we arent talking what is best we are talking exclusivity.Where i live i see 100 times the amount of 997's than i see 964/993's.If i want an awesome car to travel distance at high speed i would buy a Rs4 and forget the Porsche bollox.(they lose money as well in spades)..did you know that Porsche cut build costs by 50% between the 993 and 996?Probably has a small impact on value, quality and longevityrolleyes

Mistaking input for output is a strange way of looking at quality. Smarter engineering and sharing components/platforms (the 996 was nothing more than a rear engined Boxster...) reduces cost without impacting quality. Following your logic, the former communist states had the highest quality in everything as production cost was so much higher than in the West...rolleyes

in ten years time there could be more 911s produced than 3 series coupes.

Time will tell wont it..is a 2006 aston v8 a better car to drive than a db5?Yes is the answer..lets have a look at the relative values of both cars over the last 2 years, one has gone up and the other has lost 20%.Most modern cars are bloody good(r32's,rs4's,focus st'etc) but enthusiasts want more than that, they want exclusivity and a bit of nostalgia.A 993tt in 1995 had 4wd and 408bhp,was state of the art and had very few peers performance wise at that time. Now we have Porsche producing cars like the Cayman at 50k+ that cant hold its own against a proper 4 seat Audi at 5k less.Summary,Old Porsches were relatively very special in their day and new ones arent.Values prove that.Would a prospective early 90's Porsche buyer consider an Audi or a BMW as a serious alternative? No,but they do now.

It would be great actually. Perhaps indicating rising levels of prosperity etc.

The reason they sell so many is that they are Brilliant!!! and the global economy is still good. And of those 100k only about 3000 come to the UK a year....still fairly rare given the 26m cars on the UK roads IMO

Also If the OPC are to be believed my local is only getting 8 C2S's next year and 1 Turbo as most of Porsche's production is heading to the growth markets of China and USA....so should help residues in the short term anyway. wink

You quote Rolex vs Swatch??.. Exclusivity?? If you want that buy a GT40 or Bugati, or one of the fewer produced Porsche models. Maybe they should just build 10k cars a year, so all the chosen ones can have/own until such time as they choose to infalate the prices the best they can for personal gain. I dont buy anything just because its exclusive. If you want Exclusive buy a Delorean, wear pink cheque American golf pants and a Lilac cheese cloth shirt and drive backwards down the Old Kent Road. If its about getting yourself noticed thats a good starting point..oh and wear sandles!..With regard to numbers they churned out 75000 993 cars is variuos types, had it been possible for them they would have churned out a 100k of them..think yourself lucky they didnt because with such outdated production costs in terms of both expence and time the company would have gone under. They have reduced build costs in line with all other things in the modern era..it doesnt mean they are turning out crap at all. I am no expert but from what I have read on here the 964 and 993 have huge build quality issues, engine and body problems. You can still carve a prodlematic car..even out of Granite!!! While ime on my soapy box, I also hope one day that Porsche choose who they sell the RS models to with great care..If I was Porsche I would install a sell on clause within a given period of time. A big difference exists between true enthusiasts and speculators!! Come the revolution..oh its already happening..Good!! smile

Yeah with the USs having such a strong currency at the moment, I can see why Porsche would want to sell all these German built cars for a pitance over there...
