I seek some advice from the BIB on this forum,

Hypothetically speaking if I was to be stopped by the BIB's for speeding and once they pull me over and ask the standard question:

"Do you know why we have stopped you/pulled you over?"

Assuming it is obvious the reason they have stopped me, is for speeding...Is it better to:

A) Admit you you were speeding hence giving the BIB an admission of guilt which may aid in issuing fines/points etc.

B) Feign ignorrance and reply "I'm not sure sir"

Alternativly if you have any advice on what to say to the BIB's in such an instance that may make them a little more lenient or let you off all together would be greatly appreciated. ( I do understand that leniency will depend on how fast over the limit one is travelling)

Thanks

Fizz

It's just a simple psychological tactic to get the ground rules established first of all; the questioner is then in control and is able to decide the outcome of the conversation with reduced risk of argument. "But you've already admitted speeding", etc. etc.

If you're going to give me a ticket, then just get on with it. It's not like you get this option with a Gatso is it?

I'd say that my speedo over-reads and the last time I checked I didn't think I was breaking the speed limit. You tell me, officer - did you manage to get a lock on me or are you just stopping me because my engine is in the wrong place? wink

no BiB is going to tell you not to admit it.

the "you tell me" thing just makes them angry, im on 4 angry BiB out of 4 BiB on that one now.

Being polite does you no harm whatsoever and it's very refreshing to hear somebody being honest. I think admitting to going a bit quick will not change the outcome for the worst, ie get you a ticket where you may not have done.

Remember it's much harder to give a ticket to someone who seems decent & honest over someone with attitude or a smart alec like Ducati.

Yes indeed, bowing and scraping has it's place.

MANY years ago I was in the car with my mate Dave who was going a bit quick, and a copper drove past us in the opposite direction. He went past us and disappeared around a curve in the road without his lights on. We slowed down but didn't see anything else until the blue lights caught up with us further up the road, he'd obviously turned around in the mean time.

He pulled us and asked if Dave if he knew why. Dave said "I think I might have been going a bit fast back there." He said "Yeah, I'll say(!). How fast do you think you were going?" Dave replied "I don't know."

Dave got breathalysed, name and reg check over the radio. All came back clean so he was just given a talking to and let off. I've no doubt that he would have been nicked if he'd got a speed reading on us, but he obviously hadn't. I don't think Dave would have got off if he had admitted to a speed.

So in summary, he admitted to going "a bit quick" but did not explicitly admit to breaking the speed limit by i) saying "speeding" or ii) naming a speed, so since the copper lacked any other evidence Dave got off. Don't antagonise police, but don't incriminate yourself either until you're sure they've 'got you'.

Just remember, politeness is a two way street. The standard opening gambit in these types of conversations often comes across as being confrontational, and designed to annoy the motorist.

Hi smile

Thats fine as an answer but its not the usual one I get....that is"UMMMM" and then something like...you were going a little fast there sir...etc

I dont know why everyone is scared of Policemen (or Policewomen)....they are just ordinary people who enforce the law....they are not god (or the devil)

I was a soldier long ago and I enforced various laws in various countries....with a gun....and it was the gun that created the respect....not me personally..

A while ago after being stopped for absolutely nothing ( he even admitted the overtake he had watched was within the limit and was a safe maneuver)....I asked the young policeman (he was about 13) if it was an offence to waste police time ??

He answered yes.....so I said should I go to the local station and report YOU for wasting police time to your Inspector then ?

He had absolutely no idea what to say...smile so i said if you have finished wasting both of our times I am off smile

I got in my Porsche and drove off....and I swear his mouth was still open when I left smile

All the best Brett smile

Mmmm,
bit risky that, trying to put BiB on back foot, front foot might come further forward than you may like.

I would say that with 80% or more of people this would work well. This works especially well with someone who has said the same thing the same before and follows a set procedure. Any derivation from that, or even turning it around will make it difficult for them to keep control of the situation and would rather submit and comply rather than argue, or may even lose themselves completely.

An example is that in every Mcdonalds I have ever been in I have ordered a meal in the same way naming the meal and the drink I would like with it. Without fail, the next question I am asked is the next on the 'list' which is what drink I would like with my meal!

Of course, the average bobby is a bit more intelligent than that and has a more varied life than supplying Fanta or Coke, but the idea is the same. However... the risks are higher as in rare occasions the 'turning around' of the questioning evokes the 'fight' instead of 'flight' response!

Hi smile

I see your point, and if it really brought out the fight in him, I would just arrest him, cuff him then deliver him back to his Inspector...
