I run a Carrera S as my everyday car with the odd track day thrown in. It is easy to live with and has the added advantage over the standard Carrera of the PASM.

I guess it depends on your budget but I would go for an S but I'm sure that the standard Carrera is very capable although I've not driven one.

There was quite a bit of comment in the motoring press (esp Autocar) that the standard 997 was actually a nicer road car than the 997'S'. Part of the reason was the 18" wheels and non-pasm spec (some people don't like pasm) and the option of pccbs on the test car, which further improved the ride and handling.

However, I drove a base 997 (with 19" wheels and Tiptronic) and I was a bit disappointed. IMO it would probably have been better on 18"s, 6-spd and + PSE. Best to try both and decide for yourself.

Having owned both (997 18's then 997S 19's) I have to say that the S rides just as well as the standard car. The tyres will be more expensive too. However, it is all the little extras that make the S the more sensible used choice. Extra BHP, xennons, 19's, red brakes, white dials, PASM, twin exhausts etc... just make it feel a more special car IMHO

If it is your first 911 though, neither will disappoint you.
