I recently got rid of my E-class in order to add some spice to my life by buying a weekend car and a mile-muncher for the weekdays. I have successfully sorted the latter, but having a few issues with the 2 car concept.

I have 9 years NCB on my weekday car (a mundane-o), but clearly I cannot transfer this to work with my 2nd car (some insurers claim they might be able to do this, but in my view it seems to be all b0llocks). I am looking at a 98S anyway, so it probs wouldn't be a nightmare to get a 97R instead and then its 10yr old, and I can get a classic policy. Often these are not concerned with NCB, but do start to specify conditions like it needs to be garaged (I can't do that) and/or that I need to be 30 (I will be in Nov, but then I will have missed the Summer driving!), no convictions (I have 6 points in last 5 years) or even that the car needs to be older still at 15yr or so.

Mileage conditions are not an issue as it will be only for playing with, but the others seem to be awkward.

Does anyone have any advice regarding insurance when running a TVR as a second car?

The cheapest (unusable) quote is £500 for a garaged vehicle, which is cheaper than the cheapest quote I could get if I pulled my NCB off my main car to the TVR, so it seems that classic policies are the way to go, but I want one that isn't arsed about garage (driveway is fine), will insure the under 30's and will accept 10yr old (or pref 9yr old) examples.

Am I asking too much?

Thanks

I'm sure a few will be mentioned like A plan and mannings but i have used hagertys (i am 28)

They don't use no claims bonus and although it is cheaper if garaged i don't believe it is a requriement. They are listed as classic cars but they insured my 3 yr old TVR.

They also have the option of increasing mileage as and when you want to, or optional trackday insurance (may have been an extra 10% for each track day IIRC) but you can do either of these with a phonecall as and if you need them

Also brilliant customer service, very friendly. thumbup

Bell Direct used to offer to match the NCB of your first car if you insured your second with them. I did this and now have two sets of full NCB. I have found Bell and Direct Line are both fairly cheap for a standard Chim for me (under 30, Chim not stated as garaged (usually is, but didn't want to take any chances with it being stolen from drive!)). It is worth asking as I believe that many insurers will bonus match for a second car (or give some incentive!).

HI

I found that A Manning gave a reasonable quote and recognised my NCB for the Griff that I bought last year. If you're a member of the TVRCC they give a discount

don't know whether the garage is a requirement but try ClassicLine - always friendly, cheap and will cover trackdays too - 01455-639000.

When I spoke to Admiral they let me use my no claims on both the cerb and the BMW. It isnt how the mult car policy works but they were happy to do it.

That's what we did originally too. Have now gone with Hagerty for the S. NCB irrelevant, best quote by far smile

I used A Plan. I put my full NCB on the TVR and they found me an insurer who gave one years worth of NCB on the daily runner (and it was a good deal). I am going to build that up so that I have full NCB on both. I pay £500 for the Tiv and £400 for the daily runner (which will reduce as I build the NCB up).

Hi,

I'm 30 and I just insured my 1999 Chimaera 450 as a second car - parked on the drive in a not great postcode - no special security mods - 5000 miles restriction - SD&P. A Plan mirrored my rangerover ncb immediate cover.

Cost 395.00 (with a 250 excess + 60 windscreen excess)

Best quote I had by far and a really friendly service.

Sunninghill specialise in TVR and used to mirror no claims from another car so I assume they still do. Excellent service fom nice people at a good price in my experience.

Give Admiral's multi-car policy a try. I have my full NCD on a Tuscan, costing £500 a year to insure, and them my BMW 130 runabout cost £700 without any NCD at all. They're both insured for both myself and my girlfriend, have sensible £250 excesses, and full business cover on the Beemer. The NCDs are kept separate, and are earned concurrently on both vehicles.

Cheers,
Pete

I used heritage previously and now hagerty (best price by far!) had the chim since she was 8 years old, always been insured on an agreed value classic policy so NCB doesnt come into it.

Anyone going with Admiral check if it covers being left unattended with the roof off - I think it was them who didn't cover this.

If you get a quote they pester you like mad afterwards with phone calls and e-mails.

I've gone with Hagerty this year. Much cheaper than the previous (Classicline - who also insisted that the car was garaged when I was home - even for 10 mins!!) - and they cover with the roof off as well so worth talking to them.

When I bought my TVR I was insuring my daily car with Elephant (still do!) and managed to get them to do 'points matching' ont he TVR policy. This gave full no claims on 2 policys, and the cheapest TVR quote. The great thing is that there were no limitations on mileage or use as they matched everything between thr polices.

I've previously insured my TVR with Mannings and Sunninghill.

This year I've gone with Hagerty, since they were 30% cheaper than the others, and there was less nonsense about which track-day organisers were included and which weren't (Hagerty include "any reputable ones&quotwink. Trackdays are covered for 10% of your annual premium plus IPT (5%).

I would say that perhaps Mannings and Sunninghill need to work on their communication skills. Not replying to letters is a jolly good way of ensuring loss of my repeat business.

watch out for the cancellation fees on classic policies. Can cost you the whole yr. So if you arent sure you are keeping the car for the year then possibly the likes of Admiral etc might end up cheaper.

Just had a quote from haggerty's of 610. This is way over double what it would be if it was garaged, which was about 240, on an agreed value of 13k and 5k miles PA. They are only concerned with points and claims in the last 3 years, so I basically have none in that period. Also, this is on a 1998 car. It goes down slightly if over 10 years old, but not much. The massively overriding factor is the garaging.

610, whilst a lot more, is still not that much I suppose.

I will of course check the cancellation charge, after someone pointed this out!

I don't plan to get rid of the car within a year, but then I suppose when it comes to TVRs, its quite difficult to plan anything.

I think adrian flux were at about 650, but unsure of the cover/conditions.
