LT 77 New gearbox oil, WHAT A DIFFERENCE
Discussion
Ever since i bought my Griffith with the LT77 box people told me that a notchy gearchange was part of the deal. I contacted Castrol Germany a few years back and asked their advice, they adviced me to use Castrol SMX-S oil for the Rover box. I must say gearchanges became better but never to a level of a modern car. I thought, well they all do that Sir, so this is as good as it gets.
A few weeks back i decided to give it another try and contacted the German Castrol engineer again, i still had his email. He told me that they had a new product that they now recommend for the Rover LT77 gearbox, it's called Castrol Transmax Z. Today i drained the box and filled it with the new Castrol oil, BOY WHAT A CHANGE !!
I was used to go through first and second gear before putting it in reverse, i'm sure many of you do (with the Rover box). I put it in reverse straight away, and no cracking or anything...., things started to look promising. I drove the car the entire afternoon, changing gears as much as i could, and had a great time. The box changes gears with an ease never felt before, i'm truly amazed. I did about 20 reverse gear changes, and they all worked perfectly. I have no idea what the box will feel like when it's cold, i will try that tomorrow morning.
All in all this new oil made such a big improvement that i wanted you all to know about it.
Fred
Oil now tested with a cold gearbox, again a major difference.
PS i'm not working for Castrol, nor do i get any discount ( 3 liters=72 euro)
