Night time F1 race gets the green light...

What do people think of the idea that we are going to get night races from next year in F1?
Have been to the BTCC race which ran at night, but does it come across on the box?
I seem to think most drivers are against it, but the sportscar guys/girls seem to cope with night racing which is normally much darker than what the F1 guys will have to deal with.
I wonder if we shall see any lighting on the cars, or will they relie solely on fecking huge lighting systems trackside...

If they are going to put up huge trackside lights and light the track up like its daylight, then whats the FHave been to the BTCC race which ran at night, but does it come across on the box?

I think the point is that Bernie can take the sport to rich countries on the other side of the world while still keeping up European viewing figures (got to keep the sponsors happy) by having the race run midday Europe-time. point of a night time race.Fitting lights to the cars and driving them in the dark is the challenge, but TV coverage is goint to be shite!

Pointless doing it with massive lighting and dull to watch without.
Yet more Ecclestone cash grabbing with no real care for the racing spectacle.
To all these people who keep saying 'fit lights to the cars and run them in the 'proper' dark'

Come on, get real! They're single seaters, not GT or touring cars, they're never going to have lights fitted to them. So the circuits will need to be floodlit.
However, before writing night racing off immediately, think about the atmosphere it will create. And as for the driving being the same as driving in the daytime, is it the same when you're driving along the motorway under the lights then? No, it isn't.
The drivers will have different perspectives of corners and each other as there will be shadows being cast everywhere. As for the sponsors, why won't they be happy? Hasn't anyone else seen that it works in the US for NASCAR and the illuminous branding that's used on 'Ring 24 and Le Mans cars would look fantastic on a GP car.

You are all asuming a night race will be in the dark. Its light till 10 pm at the moment.....
As has been mentioned, its to get top dollar paying circuits to be seen at reasonable times in Europe.
On a side note, i forget which one but the grand prix which was early evening for us was far better than the usual time. At two on a sunday i would rather be out in my Lotus than in front of the telly. To watch the grand prix live early evening would suit me far more.

The concept is all right (in a way) if the race could be run under natural daylight condition. However, all the talk up to now had been about floodlit races.
My suggestion is to build tracks near Spitzbergen and at McMurdo Sound. That means races could take place at either end of the season at any time of the day in daylight as both tracks would be in zones which get 6 months of continual sunlight.
