Well I had the opportunity to do my IAM through my gap year placement which was nice so obviously I did it and passed. This has definately improved my driving and awareness. Why cant they scrap the pass plus and try to encourage more young drivers to do this. I passed my driving test nearly two years ago now and this would have definatley stopped me from having the crash I had due to poor awareness.

One random question though, I rang my insurers and they said that this made no difference to my premium which is ridiculous. Anyway I know that there are insurers that will give discount for IAM members who is best for young drivers?

Hazzaboy

well done on passing the IAM test. Without doubt a valuable use of your time.

Unfortunately I am past the point of needing to know about who is best for insuring young drivers. However, my experience (as a slightly more mature driver) is that those who offer any form of discount are few and far between. Worst of all though is that when you find someone who does offer a discount they are usually those whose premiums start at a higher level anyway. As a result I have found it remains cheaper to go to a firm who do not discount for holders of IAM or other advanced driving qualifications.

Nonetheless, any efforts to improve your driving obviously have the potential to save you far more than a few quid on your insurance premium so it will always be a worthwhile investment in my view.

Cheers

Thanks everyone, you are correct in saying the discount will only knock off the extra they put on in the first place. The thing is if you crash you are more of a liability so the premium goes up but if you then improve your skills by doing an IAM course or equivalent it has no impact. Really shows that the insurance industry is biased, well we all knew that.

Because they are so expensive I wont be able to afford to keep my car through uni and now I will have to use the fabulous public transport system in this country.

Hazza,

Well done!

Think more about the value of preserving your no claim bonus (and maybe your life) as a result of taking driver education as opposed to 10% off this years insurance?

Congratulations on your pass, and as for the insurance, take comfort from the fact that I'm a Police class 1 advanced driver and a Police driving instructor and I don't get any insurance discounts.

That's coz you spend you time on mad car chases going after the baddies like you see on The Dukes of Hazzard and the Sweeney, so your insurance premium should in fact go up Reg!
