4.5 engine stripdown
Discussion
I am considering garaging the Cerb for the winter months as a project,
including an engine stripdown, among other things.
Armed with one of those Cerbera manuals, and the engine OUT of the car, how hard is an engine rebuild if I have only de-coked down to the heads on an old XR2? As far as experience goes.
All I have done on the Cerb so far is change the oil pressure switch (taking everything off to get to it was the hard work), brakes, replace window guide felts, oil, park plug, air filter change, fit decat pipes, and a few electrical bits.
And what is the rough cost of materials for a top end rebuild?
Thanks all.

If you're thinking about a simple heads off decoke and clean up, then I guess it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
Once the engines out then it's pretty straight forward.
I would think you're looking at a pair of head gaskets, a set of stem seals and a tube of sealant, at a minimum.
I needed to buy some stem seal pliers to get the old seals off!
As to what else you change that'll be upto you and dependant on what you find/break when stripping the 'lump' down. I was horified by the state of the fuel lines, one ruptured as soon as I touched it, so I replaced them all, injector O rings were replaced, inlet manifold O rings replaced, etc etc, the list can go on.
All bits can be bought from TVR Power.
Good luck
Tim
PS: My simple change of stem seals has led to and engine out, new heads and a few other tweeks, all due to a valve guide failure - so beware the smallest jobs have a habit of escallating in scale!

Sounds pretty much the same as the the job I did on the Ford OHV block.
And yeah, I know all to well about the smallest job turning into a winter project.
Are the tappets adjustment a hard job? When I did the XR2, I did it by turning the front wheels. Forgot what method its called. A friend mechanic showed me.
But the Cerb is a bucket and shim (whatever that is), so I guess there is a special way to do Cerb tappets?
Thanks

Well I needed a gearbox and there was that one on ebay, engine, box, loom etc all the gubbins. diycerb off here.
So I thought I may as well get that, pull mine out, fit that, freshen mine up and improve it and then do the same to the other one once mine's replaced.
'tis a 4.2 with 47k.

I've been here and done this with my last car. It never quite goes as simply as you think.
To be honest - if you're going to the trouble of having the engine out then I'd probably go and have it rebuilt by someone with a warrenty.
The trouble is you end up with product/repair creep. - Take my recent experience.
Aircon was leaking at the joint at the condensor, so the rad had to come out. Well if the rads coming out I might as well have it rebuilt/recored and the condensor overhauled as well. Then the water rails were pitted so I'll replace those with the stainless ones. Then some of those pipes look worn, then new clips...
All for the sake of a 20p o-ring
Then thing is - if it's coming out then you might as well do it once and do it properly.

Currently constructing a new table in my garage for when I do this as from past experience you can never have enough table space.
I really want to get an engine stand but not sure the obvious clarks one will fit the engine.
Really wanted to document it but know from experience that two minutes in with oilly hands I'll forget all about the camera.

Thanks for all your rplies chaps.
I think I'll try taking out and having any cracks/fractures welded first. See if that elimminates the fumes in the cabin, and quietens the engine bay noise.
I would be interested in hearing the method used to adjust the TAPPETS if anyone here has done them.
