MOT,s and Gear Oil
Discussion
Evening all, after spending almost 5 years in a damp lockup without even being started-up, I've decided to put my '89 350i back on the road. Looks like I got off lightly, only problems so far are pitted rear discs and the headlights (turn on sidelights - bumper sidelights come on, headlights pop up but won't come on until switch is on dipped main). Anyway, Im busy servicing it and want to know which oil any of you recommend for the gearbox. Also, does anyone know of any TVR friendly garages in the Newcastle area where I can get it MOT,d? Finally the rear discs- a big job to replace them - so in desperation (cos now I want to get it on the road ASAP) I'm going to lift the back end, chock the front wheels and idle the engine in 2nd or 3rd to spin the discs. Then I can skim them with something suitable to get it through it's MOT !! Like I said, in desperation...
The best gearbox oil is the expensive (obviously ) semi-synthetic Castrol 75W-90 stuff, Halfords stock it. As for skimming the rear discs why not give this a go?

I did and it works reasonably well, just need some old brake pads to stick the abrasive to.
