A friend of mine has a 1700cc Rover engined car. Nothing too special but he experienced starting problems when we drove to Le Mans, usual thing pull into petrol station then dead for 10 or 15 minutes.

Is this a 'Hot Start Problem' or is it immobiliser related, any suggestions?

Probably starter motor - dicky solenoid perhaps, or when mine did this a couple of times it was a wire that had popped off. Lots of info on blatchat about it.

Also, would have thought it'd be a 1600 or 1800 (though it could feasibly be a 1700).

Sounds like the Caterham Click.
Caused by poor contacts in the starter relay within the MFU. If you're a member of L7CGB a search of Blatchat will find details, altough you may become even more confused.
If you send me a PM I'll let you have details of the 'cure'

Like Risky said - though you don't have to be a member to search the archives. Use the search button at the top and search archives for click of death.
Though it looks like Risky has got you sorted already.

We had this with ours. What happens is that the solenoid within the motor expands due to the heat of the engine and so causes lots of friction, leading to the starter motor struggling to turn it. Solution is to possibly "refresh" the starter motor and refit it with a soldering iron mat over it to stop it from getting too hot. Worked for us!

Thanks for the help chaps, I'm seeing my friend tonight so I'll ask if he's got it sorted or pass on your suggestions.

There's a really good site linked from blatchat that goes through servicing the starter, and adding a new relay.

I took my starter apart, cleaned it out, re-greased it and heat shielded it which helped for a bit, but Ive recently replaced the wiring and added a new relay (to replace the one in the box on top of the ECU) to see if that helps. I'll know after the 14th (track day!)

Good luck with yours smile
