Bear with the long post.....
I`ve had a problem on one of the SD1`s for a while now...it was losing oil in the gearbox & the symptom was similar to a slipping clutch...topped up the gearbox oil ...problem went away...a month later..same problem ,same solution...towards the end of last year after a top up...the drive never came back & despite the top up, the drive is no longer there..
I had it diagnosed as a punctured vacuum membrane in the gearbox that a vacuum line from the intake manifold goes into..causing the oil in the sump & gearbox to mix & also combust the sucked up gearbox oil.

It`s been in the garage for too long now so I need to sort this first on it`s repair & wonder if the gearbox has now died or would the membrane repair & flush bring it back to life...I only ask as it will cost at least 60 quid to me to re membrane it & fully flush it with the correct autobox oil ...only to find out that it did indeed die last year...
.Anybody ever had this problem on a Rover 3 speed auto box....?
....regards....

its a common problem with all vac modules on auto boxes, Ford 4 speeder are particularly prone to it. If the box has done hi miles with little or no fluid it will be screwed, if you kept an eye on the fluid level and didnt allow it to run out you should be ok. Fit another vac module and refill with fluid and try it, if its knackered, get another box and fit your new vac unit to that, the only wasted money will be in trans fluid. When I used to sell 2nd hand auto boxes I used to demand that new vac units were fitted or the box warranty would be void.
the vac unit is external and easy to change

hope this helps

Sounds like a seal internally may have gone now causing total loss of drive(very common in old auto boxes)generally when the vacuum unit side goes down you will fill the street with dense white smoke, front pump seal failure can also be your oil loss, only leaking when hot and engine running in drive(also common failure)this is often missed.
