Been looking at getting some new wheels for mine for quite some time now and have done loads of research.

The standard wheels and tyres on my 94 400 Chimaera are:
Front: 205/55x15, 7" rim width, offset ET25; overall height 607 mm
Rear: 225/50x16, 7.5" rim width, offset ET33; overall height 631 mm

If power steering was fitted, fronts tyres would be 225/50x15 with height of 606 mm
The bigger engined cars had 245/45x16 rears which have a height of 624 mm

I've found the various tyre options to be (to keep the overall height close to original):
Front:
205/40/17 - 597 mm height, 7.0-8.0 rim width
215/40x17 - 606 mm, 7.0-8.5
215/35x18 - 607 mm, 7.0-8.5
Rear:
225/45x17 - 636 mm, 7.0-8.5
235/40x17 - 620 mm, 8.0-9.5
245/40x17 - 628 mm, 8.0-9.5
225/40x18 - 636 mm, 7.5-9.0
245/35x18 - 629 mm, 8.0-9.5

So, for a 7x17 inch wheel, the max rear tyre would be a 225/45. This is ok for the 4 litre cars, but may not be suitable for the 4.5 or 5 litre cars. Ideally, an 8" rim is needed, but there seem to be very few 17x8 rims. An 18" rear is an option, but it is still difficult to find 8" widths in decent styles!

Do you know if i`d need spacers for e.g 17 x 7" or 17 x 7.5".

Hi

I spent ages looking into this and opted for the following on my Griff500:

2 x 17x7 ET25 with 215/40 ZR17 ToyoT1R
2 x 17x8 ET37 with 245/40 ZR17 ToyoT1R

The rolling radius are about 1% different, there are no spacers and the the offset is virtually perfect. The car handles beautifully. My advice would be to *refuse* to compromise on the dimensions for the sake of fashion. The whole point of changing is to improve the performance right?

For 17x7" wheels front and rear, go for offset (ET) of 25 and no spacers would be needed.

Not sure on 7.5". This link is a useful offset calculator which should help. Trying to get an offset close to 33 for the rear would keep the wheel in the approx same position as the original. Not sure what offset you would need for a front 7.5 rim

I would personally try to find wheels that come in the correct offset, and only resort to using spacers if i found a set of wheels that i really wanted but dont come in correct size! It's difficult trying to find a whee with the correct offsets though.
