Radio Backlight Failure

Hi All,
Although it has been dark in the radio department since 2003, I have decided to repair it or at least get it replaced.
Does anyone have further info on the failure mode of these lights, as I hear it is common?
I took the unit apart and there is five or six bulbs, from this I would presume that the failure is related to the light control circuit, I guess there should be a backlight in the LCD too...
Does anyone know if a company offers repair, if not, has anyone fitted an aftermarket unit?
