What is the 'best' G50 gearbox to use?
I remember I was originally advised by the factory to stick with 4 speed box (This is in 1997 though!!) as the ratios were more suitable than the 5 speed, but most people seem to be running 5 or 6 speed boxes now.
Thanks
Matt

Factory seem to recommend the G50/00 (5 speed, best ratios) or the Getrag these days.

Am ideally looking for a short box so it doesn't stick out the back and look untidy, but please mail me details of the above boxes, could be interested in either/both.

Obviously I agree that the 4 speed is better suited than a standard 5 speed, but then I would as I've fitted one to my car and it does 60 in first and 212 in 4th.

Also contrary to what some people think the 4 speed is much shorter than the average 5 speed. Its also easier to get a decent ratio final drive.

HOWEVER you will find it hard to source the drive shafts for a 4 speed (unless you can convince the factory to tell you were they used to get theirs from)and the clutch was also a challenge as you have to convert to hydraulic and finally the gearlinkage will have to be fabricated from scratch.

Unless you view these as challenges rather than hassles I would stick with the 5 speed as currently recomended by the factory.
