As the title says! I've been trying to look into brakes lately and been looking on the classifieds and Ebay but no joy. I need some pretty meaty brake and need them fast!

Can anyone with experience of some well used and abused brakes recommend what they've got? In particular anyone doing lots of track days or high speed runs.

Anyone got any Tuscan challenge type 6 pots?

Cheers for any advice!

Dannylt had some 6 pots on his Cerberra, which he reckoned were the best things he had on there. He had them for sale, but it was a long long time ago . .

They were Brembo 8 pots, I know 'cos i fitted them on his Cerbie .. they were really too overpowering for anything except really hot slicks I think though .. we did a track day at Donington and the front brakes locked very easily on road rubber .. the calipers were stunning though with 8 drilled pistons and 4 pads per caliper. Sadly the calipers were left outside by a dealer and effectively reduced to scrap frown I still have the discs and everytime i want a giggle at how big brakes can be I go and dig them out. They realy were monsters. I think they originally came via some guy who was rally engineer to colin mcrae and they were ex Focus WRC discs .. Danny would be able to tell you more I'm sure.

What condition are the discs in and what size where they?

I was looking into this recently, various searches here on PH came up with this lot (who have a good rep I think)

http://www.movit.de/htm/tvrc.htm
Car featured in the ad also popped up and was bought recently by a Pher I think - those discs look awesome.

And also the aforementioned Hi Spec who also did a car featured on their website here

http://www.hispecbrake.co.uk/customer's_cars.htm

Don't that is your one is it Campbell, so must be 2 around at least running hi-spec.

Craig if you are ditching 4.5 callipers and bits then I may be interested in buying your old ones, I am on small 4.2 stuff at the moment and the calipers only take a max size disc of about 304 I think, 4.5 size would be fine for my needs I concluded.

Was chatting to you about it the other day Craig, but I'll post my findings up here in case it's beneficial to anyone else. The CP5200s on my car can take a maximum 330mm disc. IIRC later cars have CP6600s which have a different spacing between the mounting bolts. 330mm is a standard AP size (4.5s are a 322mm disc) and the Cerby bell has a standard AP bolt pattern (12 bolts on a 7" PCD), so all you need is a bolt kit and the replacement discs go straight on. The caliper is radially mounted and just needs spacing out 4mm. I had the original two piece discs on my car, so I just went for replacement discs from BG Developments.

If you want to go to the next size up and have 5200s, then there are a number of AP 6 pot calipers with the same 152mm mounting bolt spacing, that can take larger discs again - either a 355 or 362mm disc. The pad area is very similar between the 4 pot CP5200s and for instance the 6 pot CP7040s, so the main factor in altering your brake bias is the increase effective diameter of the discs. I don't know if going to a 355 mm disc would alter the bias enough that you'd have to adjust it, nor whether the volume displaced by the 6 pistons versus the standard 4 would alter the bias or mean a different master cyl is required.

Have a chat with Peter Humphries (GreenV8S) before you consider high spec.

Yep, I did this too - but I took the old spacers to a metal specialist who manufactured a new identical pair, only thicker. Went from 292 standard TVR drilled one-piece to 330mm Grooved AP two piece items and think thats about as far as you really need to go - I'd just upgrade the pads on the 330s if I needed them for something 'special'

What are the thickness of the 2 piece 330mm discs?

Another brake option is given here, they're monsters. http://www.kad-uk.com/media/brakecat_1.pdf

Should have mentioned - 355mm discs would need a new bell - 9" PCD is used for the disc mounting.

I agree. Now everything has bedded in there's plenty enough stopping power for me. I'm running DS2500s for the road and was recommended DS3000s for track use. Whether this is enough for the flying Scotsman remains to be seen though. smile

Thanks for the links guys! I've made some calls and are waiting some responses.

One point though! I would avoid Hi Spec as they are clueless on the Cerbera! I've just been told that I need to tell them what car it's brakes are from Sierra or Granada! lol

When I told them it was the TVR AP racing brakes he was lost! hehe

Steve, have I understood you correctly - you went from the standard 322mm to the AP 330mm? Did it really make that much of a difference?

Windsor, did you not change from the 4.2 to 4.5 callipers as well as I thought you had to do this due to a limitation on size on the original 4.2's. Might be about to save me some dough if you didn't ears

You are right there TC, I was lucky in that my car had the callipers changed by a previous owner (for some unkown reason) and so it already had the bigger 4.5 calliper, but still using the 292mm discs. You can tell by looking at them as the 4.5 callipers have 6 bolts holding it together, the 4.2 one have only 4.

I would look at getting some used 4.5 callipers, some old 4.5 two piece discs/bells and then doing the conversion - the 330s look so much better than the 292s and the brakes now are very powerful and if anything they just get better with heat in them. The old 292s didn't inspire confidence TBH.
