IMHO.
Too expensive for that mileage.
But, as they say, buy on condition - but it'd need to be mint for 19k.. I'd say if its average condition you'll have some wiggle room.
As for depreciation - if you get it for a fair price, you wont lose too much money as its passed the 100k and 150k mental barriers people have with mileages - you do mention 200k, but do you really expect to put 40k onto it?

You need to see the car. There is little or no relation between the work the car has done and the mileage it`s traveled (Inner London car versus a car sitting on the motorway). It could be a good car, it could be a bad one, you don`t know until you`ve seen it assuming you know what you`re looking at. As for resale it all comes down to the money, if it`s cheap it will sell. Look at it this way:
What would you pay for a 2000 cab with sensible numbers on the speedo - £30k? What would that car be worth in a few years with another 30k on the clock - £25k? (and I`m generalising with the prices rather than trying to be precise). Take the same £5k off the car you`ve found, do you think it will make £5k less than today`s purchase price come re-sale time. The answer is of course it will, in fact it`ll probably be worth the same figure it sells for this time so depreciation-wise you`re quids in and you don`t have to worry about how many miles you put on the car during your ownership you`re hardly going to destroy any mileage premium when you`re starting at 170k mls!! You just need to make sure the car is a good one, (as you do with any car).
Hope that helps.

Good food for thought people - thanks.
Are these pretty robust cars??
I am flicking between a mega mileage 911 that has probably already gone through most of its depreciation vs. a 'normal' mileage 3.2 boxster.
Would really love the 911 though! Its been ont here for a while so i reckon the price could be beaten down.
Any heads up what I should be looking at for a high mileage 911 (engine wise)?
Are porsche dealers decent? ie with full Porker Serv History should the mechanicals be decent?
Unfortunalty i'm out of the country at the mo or I would be going to have a look at this.

I think you're on to a good thing here spud!
If you could knock say 2-3k off that price and it checks out as a good un , why the hell not!?
.. I think you should invest a few squid in the check , i.e. get a 111 OPC check done , and then have someone like Hartech give the engine/gearbox a proper once over ,and you'll know pretty quickly if it'll see you proudly into the next 100k miles.I'd be inclined to feel that a car that has done that much mileage is proving itself pretty bulletproof...
I must say this does make a pleasent change from the usual 'My 996 has done 45,000 miles when can I expect it it implode?' !!!

How refreshing that someone has put such huge miles on this car! WELL DONE THAT MAN!..woops, or woman.
I said this in a previous post, wouldnt it be hugely rewarding to keep a car for 5, 10, 15 or more years and at the end of it with 200 k on the clock feel the personal satisfaction that it must give?.. Used as intended over a long period would leave a great feeling would it not?..Value for the product and reward for your purchase.
Maybe my 2006 997 2s is the one to stick with and drive and drive as I am sure it could do given proper care/maintenance, and as with all things a sprinkle of lady luck.
I would be interested to here of any mega high milage water cooled 996/997 varients..purely out of interest as to what is possible.
Maybe we should all race to 250k and see if Porsche will provide a new engine to original 1 owner cars??...nice thought but maybe not!
either way happy motoring and mega miles has to be good!

it frustrates the life out of me to see 5 year old porsches with 10k on the clock being sold for a high premium
the reality is the 996 and 993 were designed and built to be robust and high mileage cars. the shame is many who own them think they are fezzers and only do a couple of k a year
my local opc service man constantly bangs on about the fact that 996's need to be driven. they see far more low mileage cars coming into the workshop for component failure as the cars dont cope well with occassional use
i have a 996 turbo and i am very tempted to keep the car for good and just run it upto whatever mileage it needs. i recall seeing a post or article somewhere about a bloke in austria who had run a turbo from new and covered 200000 miles and loved every minute of it.
sounds perfect idea to me.

Looking at it yet another way. Buy at £18k- ask yourself-what do I do if I need to spend £10k on a new engine and gearbox rebuild which you will more than likely need to at 170k miles (what modern car wont need this??). Add to this things like shocks, bushes etc and ask is it really worth it?
... Will £28k buy you a good low mileage one that can be covered by the OPC warranty...yes....
However, if you find you cannot afford £28k now or to spend £10k on it should the worst happen, you will still get £13k all day long (someone on ebay will snap it up even with a duff engine) - so your worst case loss is some motoring and a £5k loss- go for it!

Which ever way up you look at it, to hold onto it long term and use it as intended is the only way to get value for money. A great many people worry about resale value but if you can condition your head to be happy and grateful with your purchase in the long term. BINGO!..youve cracked it. I was lucky enough to be able to but a new 9972s in march 2006 and now I have added 10k miles I feel like I know the car and couyld live with it long term. Lets face it ten years with a 9972s is no real hardship is it. It is my second car (Landy 110 for dogs/kids) so its kept in tip top condition. Even if I give it away on its 10 Birthday (my son will be hovering) with say 100k on the clock its ran me at less than 600 per month plus fuel/maintentance etc. Cant be bad me thinks. Once you start chopping and changing all the time it soon becomes a very expensive exercise. I say buy the best you can afford go for the long term "keeper" attitude, learn to make the car a long term pleasure investment. I am sure at the end of say 10 years most folk would be very pleased with the value they have obtained over a long period and thebwhole thing will sit better in the heart vs head department.... The cheapest 996 cab I had was a 98 Tip in Ocean with Savannah, done just 52k but with a blown engine and both a Cat C and Cat D insurance claim record (although actually there were no signs of heavy impact or poor repairs) with no hardtop. I got under five figures for it late last year, from a dealer. That worked out better for me than putting an engine in (along with rads, header tank etc etc etc due to oil contamination) then trying to sell it on for late teens. Definitely had the makings of a very nice car though, with a decent reg too. I hope someone had it fixed properly and is now enjoying it.
Anyway, I hope this is useful for worst case scenario comparison purposes........
Anyway, I hope this is useful for worst case scenario comparison purposes........
In my opinion the only difference between this car and most lower mileage cars is that it hasn't been clocked.... I wonder how many 10 year old 996's are out there that have done 20k a year but always seem to have 8k or 9k between services....
I have no idea how common this is in the porsche world (i guess they are pretty robust so less taboo with mileage) but never believe a low mileage ferrari....
So would you prefer a car with a proper service history, that you know to be genuine, that may be in great condition, regardless of the INDICATED mileage?

Its going to be five years old in October...and I will be keeping it until it is ten years old (at least). It does everything I want from a sports car. Why change?
