260mm brake upgrade

I've been doing some research into this and thought I'd share it with you.

The caliper you need is from any sierra with 260mm front brakes 4wd or 2wd.
With early sierras this is the bigger engined models xr4i/xr4x4.
Later sierras with ABS also have these calipers with 260mm discs even the smaller engined models.

The discs need a bit more caution - from what I can make out you must get the 2wd 260mm discs, I have found that there are different part numbers for the discs for 2wd and 4wd, I'm not entirely clear why but guess there may be a different offset to allow more room for the drive shaft on 4wd models.

I actually had a lucky escape with this - I bought some 4wd discs for next to nothing on ebay, then the seller told me they were 'damaged' and sent me a refund. I'm not sure they would have fitted now.

I believe that the calipers and possibly discs are also fitted to other ford models but don't know which so won't speculate on that here.

Does anyone have more to add to this ?

I haven't done the upgrade either but was looking into it a while back before the car came off the road.

I believe you're spot on with the discs though. I found some really useful info on the Sierra owners club site about the upgrade as it's a common one done on them. The 4x4 discs have a different offset as you say as the hubs are different due to the driveshafts.

It looks like a fairly cheap upgrade too compared to the 'rare' Griff 500 brake kits which appear to be exactly the same thing

Great minds eh ?
This was my main source of info - I looked up the various model calipers & discs etc to work it all out.

I intend to get a caliper seal kit from here, unless someone has better (cheaper) suggestions.

I haven't bought discs or pads yet.
There seems to be a huge choice of discs, but alot of them are unbranded so I have no idea if they are any good.
I intend to stick with standard spec discs (not drilled or grooved) and really want to buy a reputable make.
Totally undecided on pads so far.

Just found another good source of info, Mintex online catalogue.
You can look up components and also look what other vehicles it cross references to.

Agreed - I'm just not brave enough to drill my hubs!
I'm only using the car for road use, so provided the brakes are in good nick I reckon 260mm will do for me.
I'm going to upgrade to braided hoses, decent pads & new fluid when I have it to bits too.
